    Note:
The video clip of the famed OT goal scored by Bobby Orr in game 4 of the SC Final is the CBS version as called by Dan Kelly. This archival clip is a rarity as 98% of the time, any surviving kinescopes or videotapes of the actual telecast of hockey games from this era usually emanate from the CBC's call. Does anyone know if video exists or has anyone ever heard the CBC version of the Orr goal? Just curious.

    Quote from KgnKH1 on 07/12/09 at 11:50:33:
Hi there, new poster here that's been reading these forums for a while... thought I'd respond to this. Actually Dick Irvin Jr mentions in his book 'My 26 Stanley Cups' that he and Danny Gallivan were in the CBC booth for Bobby Orr's famous goal in 1970 and that he was always curious why even the CBC uses the CBS replay of the goal with Dan Kelly's call even to this day when they show it instead of Gallivan's call. So Irvin asked someone about it at the CBC and the explanation he received was that the CBC tape of the game, along with others, was thrown away to clear shelf space which they were apparently short of at the network, believe it or not.

Thanks for the info and welcome aboard.

If true about Danny and Dick, I will assume that they were Boston for games 3 and 4 of the SC Final, and list Bill and Brian for the first 2 games in St. Louis. This would then be consistent with the split crews for the previous rounds. I would guess this is because with both the Habs and Leafs out of the playoffs for 1970, the CBC wanted to give both the Montreal and Toronto crews equal coverage. Except for the first two games of the BOS-NY series, this would mean that Gallivan and Irvin would have called all the playoff games played at the Boston Garden.

Regarding the destroyed CBC tapes, this is a bit surprising and quite a bit sad. I had heard elsewhere that Brian McFarlane personally saved a ton of HNIC telecasts destined for the dustbin. Apparently, he couldn't save game 4 of the 1970 SC Final in time.

Here are the crews for network Canadian and American coverage of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1971. These playoffs were punctuated by the amazing upset of the Boston Bruins by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round. The Bruins set almost every hockey scoring record known to man, and then met a raw pressure-proof goalie in Ken Dryden and were ousted in 7. Please alert with errors or omissions. Much appreciated by this humble typist.

CBS made the decision to televise Game 7 of the SC Final the day after Montreal won game 6 to force a game 7. The telecast would start at the normal time of 8:30 PM eastern. Not sure of what shows had been pre-empted (I believe "Hee Haw" was one on them). This was the first prime time network telecast of an NHL game in the U.S.

This thread chronicles the 1972 Stanley Cup playoff TV crews on a network basis.

    Note:
There was a lengthy strike against the CBC by the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET) in the early part of 1972. This caused lots of disruption of much CBC news and sports programming during this time. As the playoffs arrived, CBC was reluctant to give up the right to televise the playoffs. However, MacLaren Advertising, who actually owned the rights to the NHL (in conjunction with Molson Breweries and Imperial Oil/Esso), decided to give the playoff telecast rights to CTV, at first on a game by game basis in the Quarter Finals, and then the full Semi Finals and Final.

CTV did not have 100% penetration in Canada at this time, and asked CBC to allow where its affiliates was the sole network in that market to show the playoffs. CBC refused. So, this season's Stanley Cup playoffs was not seen in some smaller markets in Canada...unless these markets were close enough to the U.S. border to pick up the signal of a CBS channel so they could at least view their telecasts.

    Note:
CBS took a calculated risk in not televising Game 5 of the Final - a potential clincher with the Bruins up 3 games to 1 on the Rangers - as they had a decent prime-time lineup on Tuesdays led by Hawaii Five-0. Thursday's prime-time schedule consisted of a mid-season replacement program and a movie. CBS lucked out and televised the cup clincher that night.

CBS originally had "Me And The Chimp" followed by "My Three Sons" (yes, that show was still around then) and I have no idea what the movie was. In the Lakeland Ledger, Ch. 6 in Orlando aired "Any Second Now" and WTVT Ch. 13 in Tampa (a CBS affiliate then) aired "Arrivaderci, Baby".

    1973

NBC took over the American telecasts of the NHL with more thorough coverage than before, stateside. Including the introduction of a cartoon figure known as "Peter Puck."

It appears that some CTV affiliates may have picked up NBC's feed of the 4/14 MTL-NYR game. CFTO in Toronto and CFCF in Montreal (at least) carried this game, while CKY in Winnipeg and ATV in Moncton, NB (at least) did not. As of now, it is not clear if CTV used Gallivan and Irvin from Hockey Night in Canada or if these (and other?) select stations used the NBC feed of Ryan and Terrible Ted. The HNIC rights in 1974 were actually held by Molson, Esso (Imperial Oil) and McLaren Advertising, under the consortium of the Canadian Sports Network and not the CBC.

The CBC affiliate (CHSJ) stayed with the Bruins-Leafs series. Just like in Winnipeg, the only way to watch Habs-Rangers was on NBC.

Also saw the Star's TV columnist that day...she was whining and moaning about how allowing the US networks on cable were corrupting everyone with too many commercials, and one day we'll realize we don't need them.

This thread will list the Stanley Cup network TV crews for 1976. For American coverage, the NHL utilized its own syndicated network. It was called "NHL Network" and was seen primarily in U.S. markets with an NHL team, usually on the channel that carried its team's games. There was a smattering of non-NHL market affiliates. As always, assistance with errors and omissions is much appreciated.

CBC announced prior to the preliminary round that they would not televise any games from the opening round. The rights were sold back to the individual Canadian teams. Since Montreal received a bye into the Quarter finals, this impacted Toronto and Vancouver. CHCH and CITY both televised all three games of the TOR-PGH series with Bill Hewitt and Brian McFarlane on the call, while CHAN (aka BCTV) picked up the VAN-NYI series with either Bernie Pascall and/or Jim Robson doing pxp with likely either Howie Meeker and/or Babe Pratt working as the analyst.

The Hawks played their "home" game instead at Nassau Coliseum (and wearing their home white sweaters to boot). Had there been a game 3, it too would have been played at Nassau.

This thread will list the national TV playoff crews for 1979. The Canadian crews will be listed by series and the American crews will only be listed game by game as so few were televised. Heaps of praise to jtgrace1 and djob for their help. As we go further back in time, there are more likely to be errors and omissions, please alert if you find any. Thanks in advance.

    CANADIAN CREWS
    PRELIMINARY ROUND
    Flyers-Canucks
Game 1, 4/10, CBC. Bob Cole, Howie Meeker
Game 2, 4/12, CBC. Jim Robson, Howie Meeker
Game 3, 4/15, CBC. Bob Cole, Gary Dornhoefer

    Notes:
In the first-round Philadelphia-Vancouver series, Bob Cole called games 1 & 3 in Philly and Jim Robson called game 2 in Vancouver. Meeker called the first two, and Dornhoefer called the third.
Jim Robson's contract with the Canucks required him to call all road games (so they didn't have to fly somebody else out to the other city, I guess) . . . therefore, he would broadcast Canucks home playoff games on CBC and road games on Vancouver radio. This went up to 1985, when he left CBC. In 1982, he went all the way to the finals this way. He called all Vancouver home games on CBC, while road games were done by Dave Hodge (round 1), Don Wittman (rounds 2 and 3), and Bob Cole (Finals).
