• Fantasy Scout - We have to change the mailing list!

    From milivella@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Tue Oct 13 05:28:17 2020
    OK, these are the news:
    "Announcement: End of Yahoo Groups
WerCOre shutting down the Yahoo Groups website on December 15, 2020 and members will no longer be able to send or receive emails from Yahoo
Groups. You can find more information about the Yahoo Groups shutdown
and alternative service options on this help page." (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo)
What we'll do (if you're OK with it, of course): up to October 19, in
this thread we can all suggest a new free mailing list server (or even a different way to announce picks, reform proposals and votes that is not a mailing list, but I'd stick to email, as it's stood the stand of
time). Then, on October 20 I'll pick a server and officially propose the switch. Hopefully the proposal will be accepted, and we'll start the
switching (even though I'll propose to have every email sent to Yahoo
Group until its shutdown to be valid).
My criteria in choosing the server will be:
    1. reliability
    2. expected to still work in 2030
    3. any other fancy feature

Follow-up question: would you be OK with using reddit?
I have huge doubts about this solution, but it has been proposed on the fantasyscout subreddit, and if someone is 100% against it, we can forget this proposal and move on.
(Remember, we need unanimity to get the reform approved.)

Google groups? I think it satisfies 1 and 2, not sure about 3

Actually*, I argue that it has two nice, useful features (#3) that Yahoo Groups used to have: a web interface if one prefers that to emails, and
the chance for each member to set your preference to receive all emails
/ a summary of the emails / no email. Also, the group can be set to be private, i.e. only members can read (indeed, the controls seem to be way
    more granular).

All in all, Google Groups seems a perfect replacement or even
improvement to Yahoo Groups... if it wasn't for expected longevity
(#2)*. Google is famous for axing even quite successful services: https://killedbygoogle.com/
Indeed, had not there been the recent redesign, I would have expected
Google Groups to be killed soon (even though I admit my perception is
swayed by the fact that I use GG mainly as a way to check RSS: maybe ,
while they aren't treating newsgroups well, this doesn't apply to the "genuine" Google groups). After the redesign... I would be still
undecided if you offered me "Google Groups exists in 2030" as an even
    money bet.

As for reliability (#1), my limited, indirect experience of Google
Groups (my wife is subscribed to one) gives me no reasons to argue with
    you (unfortunately*).

Possibly incomplete list of reasons* (and I'm skipping the fact that we
want _everyone_, not a majority, on the new list---but fortunately the
    reform rules should ensure that):

    - One can edit or delete a Reddit post.

    - Backing the content up (which may be a partial solution to the
previous problem, and is a must for me anyway) would not be automatic.

    - You don't get Reddit posts automatically sent to you.

    - Reddit is ad- or fee-supported, email is (for all practical purposes) not.

    * No, really, contradicting Futbolmetrix is my main reason to live**.

** Jokes aside, thanks for the contribution, Fut.

I expected so. :) For what's worth, I strongly prefer a mailing list to reddit.

And I haven't yet cited the other proposals I got on the fantasyscout subreddit: WhatsApp and Slack... I would pay to see your reaction at
    these! :D

Why not use RSS, given that the origin of the game is in this newsgroup ?

This is a very intriguing idea! Out of the top of my head, the main
reasons to prefer a mailing list to newsgroups are:
    - Everyone already has an email account (not true of usenet accounts).
    - Everyone already has and will keep having for 10+ years ways to use
emails (apps and webmail, not true of newsreaders or Google Groups [see
my fear of Google axing it]).
    - We should either (a) enforce a rigid post header format or (b) "spam"
all the RSSers who aren't interested in FS. But (a) seems unrealistic to
me: I don't expect twenty or so scouts, many of them having never used newsgroups, all remembering to start the header with "[Fantasy Scout]"
or whatever, and even I wouldn't be so evil that I wouldn't accept a
pick because of a badly formatted header (the exception being the rare,
lucky, successful pick by Futbolmetrix, of course).
    - Every scout has already accepted the mailing list format (not true of usenet, even though the only reason is that we never asked...).

Having said this, I'll think about this hypothesis. As I said, it
    intrigues me.

As for still being around in 2030, I doubt I will be.

You already said so around 2009, and here you are. It's more probable
you'll be grabbing FS points as Canada's center-back in 2030 than what
    you say.

(also, we can still hope the younger generations will be alive and play
    FS in 2030... ;) )
