• Draws for Champions League Round of 16 + Europa League Round of 32

    From Werner Pichler@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Sun Dec 13 23:56:22 2020
    Later today.
    Champions League:
    Seeded:
    Bayern / Dortmund / Chelsea / Juventus / Liverpool / Manchester City /
    Paris Saint-Germain / Real Madrid
    Unseeded:
    Atalanta / Atl|-tico / Barcelona / M||nchengladbach / Lazio / Leipzig / Porto / Sevilla
    Europa League:
    Seeded:
    Ajax / Arsenal / Brugge / Dinamo Zagreb / Hoffenheim / Leicester /
    Leverkusen / Manchester United / Milan / Napoli / PSV / Rangers / Roma / Shakhtar Donetsk / Tottenham / Villarreal
    Unseeded:
    Antwerp / Benfica / Braga / Crvena Zvezda / Dynamo Kyiv / Granada /
    Krasnodar / Lille / Maccabi Tel-Aviv / Molde / Olympiacos / Real Sociedad / Salzburg / Slavia Praha / Wolfsberg / Young Boys
Teams from the same association or that were in the same group can't be
drawn against each other, and neither can Shakhtar and Krasnodar.
May I just draw attention to the quite singular fact that all five current league leaders from the Top 5 nations are not to be found in the Champions League but the Europa League draw (Real Sociedad, Tottenham, Milan,
Leverkusen, Lille) where they are joined by the league leaders of nations 8 to 12 (Ajax, Brugge, Salzburg, Rangers, Dynamo Kiev).
Doesn't get any more old school European Cup than that, these days.
    Ciao,
    Werner

Could City's luck in the draws be again their undoing? (since they've often failed to up
their game once they finally had to play a serious contender)

    Lazio v Bayern
    Should be easy for Bayern.
    Atl|-tico v Chelsea
    50/50
I guess a lot will depend on the respective league tables in February.
    Leipzig v Liverpool
I'll be counting former Salzburg players in this one.
    Porto v Juventus
Porto have had a slightly subpar start to their domestic season and an easy
CL Group. Juve should make it.
    Barcelona v Paris Saint-Germain
    Revenge?
    Sevilla v Dortmund
If Haaland is fit, Dortmund. If he isn't, Sevilla.
    Atalanta v Real Madrid
Actually quite fancy Atalanta's chances here, Papu or no Papu.

Salzburg / Slavia Praha / Wolfsberg / Young Boys

    Wolfsberg v Tottenham

The sheer idea of Mou prepping Bale tactically on how to counter Sven Sprangler's
overlapping with Jonathan Scherzer while telling Son and Kane how to deal with the
    midfield duo Taferner/Liendl is delightful.

    Dynamo Kyiv v Brugge

    50/50

    Real Sociedad v Manchester United

Tough draw. Could see La Real snatching this one.

    Benfica v Arsenal

A lot of things can happen until February, but Arsenal
    finding their form? Doubtful.

    Crvena Zvezda v Milan

90's vibe. But Milan should have this (which is bad news for
Serbia's pretensions in the UEFA ranking).

    Antwerp v Rangers

Another one that could have been played in the 90's.
Rangers have impressed a lot this season, both domestically and
    in Europe.

    Slavia Praha v Leicester

Not that easy for Leicester but they should prevail.

    Salzburg v Villarreal

Meh. Third encounter between the two, Salzburg won twice
in the 2009/10 group stages and lost twice in the 2014/15 round
of 32. A lot will depend on how well Salzburg will have been able
to replace Szoboszlai with Aaronson. 40/60

    Braga v Roma

Braga could spring the upset, if it even would be one.

    Krasnodar v Dinamo Zagreb

Krasnodar have been the only Russian team in Europe to
perform decently, so should at least do better against Dinamo
    than CSKA.

    Young Boys v Leverkusen

    Molde v Hoffenheim

Annoyingly good luck in the draw for the German teams.
I wanted Hoffenheim for Wolfsberg, could have been the clash
    of the Baumgartner brothers.

    Granada v Napoli

    Tasty.

    Maccabi Tel-Aviv v Shakhtar Donetsk

Good draw for both. Which Shakhtar will show up, the one that
beat Real twice or the one that lost 0-10 against Gladbach?

    Lille v Ajax

Met last year in the Champions League with Ajax winning both
matches. Still, I somehow fancy Lille here.

    Olympiacos v PSV

Olympiacos were hardly stellar in the CL, and I've always rated
Roger Schmidt, so my money would be on PSV.

In terms of UEFA coefficient this was tough draw for us. Lots of direct clashes (BEL/SCO, BEL/UKR) which guarantee points and means that Salzburg absolutely need to win their tie against Villarreal if we want to stay in the fight.

I take it this means Spurs are favorites? I would tend to agree.

    Dynamo Kyiv v Brugge

    50/50

    Nah. Bruges.

    Real Sociedad v Manchester United
Tough draw. Could see La Real snatching this one.

    You definitely could.

    Benfica v Arsenal

A lot of things can happen until February, but Arsenal
    finding their form? Doubtful.

Maybe it's one of those seasons where they make a deep run in the EL? Yeah, let's give one to the Gooners.

    Crvena Zvezda v Milan

90's vibe. But Milan should have this (which is bad news for
Serbia's pretensions in the UEFA ranking).

Milan has built a strong young core around Zlatan, and are strong contenders for Serie A. That could lead them to underestimate the EL, but not at this stage. Prostitutes.

    Antwerp v Rangers

Another one that could have been played in the 90's.
Rangers have impressed a lot this season, both domestically and
    in Europe.

Yeah, Rangers (Tavernier and Goldson were both on the scoresheet this weekend, if I am not mistaken - if there's no pandemic this year, we'll try to reprieve Mini-Use-the-Scalp starting with the QF round)

    Slavia Praha v Leicester

Not that easy for Leicester but they should prevail.

Leicester are hit or miss. Slavia.

    Salzburg v Villarreal

    Villarreal.

    Braga v Roma

Braga could spring the upset, if it even would be one.

Roma has been quite good this year.

    Krasnodar v Dinamo Zagreb

Krasnodar have been the only Russian team in Europe to
perform decently, so should at least do better against Dinamo
    than CSKA.

Let me tell you, Russian teams are crap and can't score a goal even if their life depended on them. Dinamo.

    Young Boys v Leverkusen

    Pretenders.

    Molde v Hoffenheim

    Molde!

    Granada v Napoli

    Granada

    Maccabi Tel-Aviv v Shakhtar Donetsk
Good draw for both. Which Shakhtar will show up, the one that
beat Real twice or the one that lost 0-10 against Gladbach?

Shakhtar. They settled for the EL instead of trying to go for the win over Inter, are they going to throw it away like this?

    Lille v Ajax

Interesting draw. I'll go with ixion and say Ajax.

    Olympiacos v PSV

    Yeah, PSV.
