• 2020 CL Group Stage Matchday 6 [R]

    From Al Kamista@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Tue Dec 8 06:32:52 2020
Only listing games here that matter.

Lazio (9 pt) - Club Bugger (7 pt)
The buggers can pip Lazio to second place with a win in Italy.

    Leipzig (9) - Manure (9)
Manure own the H2H tiebreaker so Leipzig has to win today to qualify. If they draw and PSG lose to Istanbul then both these teams go through.

    Salzburg (4) - Atletico (6)
Salzburg can pip AM to second with a win.

    Group B
    Inter (5) - Shakhtar (7)
    RM (7) - BM (8)
    The best group.
Inter through with a win if RM-BM does NOT end up a draw.
SD through with a win, or with a draw if RM does NOT win.
BM through with a win or a draw, or with a loss if Inter-SD ends up a draw.
RM through with a win, or a draw if Inter beats SD.

I think I got all that right? Maybe.

We are hipsters around here so let's also look at EL qualification scenarios: Group A:
Lokomotiv still with a chance, but they need to beat Bayern and hope Atletico doesn't lose.
    Group B:
A hot mess. All teams can still finish in third place in the group. Inter cannot qualify as first.
    Group C:
Marseille needs a better result at Man City than Olympiacos at home to Porto to qualify for the EL. Otherwise, it's the Greeks. City guaranteed first place in the group.
    Group D:
Midtjylland is out. Loser of Ajax-Atalanta playoff goes to to the EL.
    Group E:
Nobody with absolutely anything to play for. Current standings are also the final standings in the group.
    Group F:
Zenit is out, loser of Lazio-Bruges goes to the EL. Dortmund not guaranteed of first place though, so they have an incentive to at least try a little.
    Group G:
Dynamo Kyiv-Ferencvaros is an EL playoff, Ukrainians through with a win or a 0-0, 1-1 and 2-2 draw, Ferencvaros needs to win or a draw with at least three goals. Juve needs to win by three goals to beat Barca to first place. Ronaldo and Messi are going against each other head to head for the first time in 947 days.
    Group H
Basaksehir is oout. Odd man out of ManU, RB Leipzig and PSG to the EL.

Reina vs. Mignolet. This match brings back memories doesn't it.

In related news, Youssoufa Moukoko just became the youngest CL player ever, beating

This is all on OGS. There I said it. Complete madness to field a defensive
XI. Only leads to every player thinking "someone else will do it". And they did. Think that. Not do it.

Now, I've been around too long to give up just yet, but...

They were a total shambles after the equaliser, and
against ten men. How often have we seen this play out
when an Italian team try to sit on a one-goal lead?

Onto Germany. Leipzig take a 2nd min lead through ex City
    boy Angelino. What. A. Strike.
This is all on OGS. There I said it. Complete madness to
field a defensive XI. Only leads to every player thinking
"someone else will do it". And they did. Think that. Not
    do it.

Credit to Leipzig too. They came out to play and have been
    almost flawless in execution.

    What happens in Paris?

On the bench, Webo, sent off by the referee at the request of
the fourth referee, accused this one to have said him "negro"
("niger" ?) so the Turkish quitted the pitch.
Having watched this on DAZN it honestly appears to me quite clear
what happened. Webo yelled something from the bench that wasn't
to the fourth official's liking, he called the main ref over and as the
entire team is Romanian told him 'that black guy over there' (Romanian:
'-ala negru', no slur) needs to be sent off. Webo hears this and goes ballistic, yelling repeatedly 'who's the Negro?'. Tempers flare, and it
appears that at the end it's also about whether it's racist to designate someone out of a group by his skin colour, and if Webo was singled
out by the fourth ref due to his colour.
A sensitive topic for sure, but more of a misunderstanding than anything.
Match is supposed to be resumed in four minutes. Perhaps the players
will just pass the ball between themselves.
    Ciao,
    Werner

You are probably right. Whether it's right or wrong to single out someone because of their race, at worst it's ignorance, not malice. To walk off because of that is hypersensitivity to the extreme, and actually damages the cause of racial tolerance in the bigger picture, not help it.
Also, Istanbul should be punished for taking the matter into their own hands, and not going through some due process. But obviously UEFA can't do that because it would be a PR disaster.
So stupid and unnecessary, the entire thing.

I think I got all that right? Maybe.

Back to football, Ajax and Atalanta tied at 0-0 at HT. Atalanta going through if this score holds.
Free-flowing fun Atalanta are surprisingly good at closing up shop.

Meanwhile Salzburg are going full in, Berisha, Koita and Daka all start. This will backfire so badly.
I cant decide whether to watch the Salzburg or Inter or Madrid game next. So many interesting options!
Salzburg looks far more dangerous in the opening 10 mins. Which means Atletico should score any moment now.

    Real 1-0 BM

    2-0 Real

If Borussia go out there will be no one else to blame considering how many late leads they squandered.

Atletico up 1-0 thanks to a set-piece goal (what else?).

At this point, the most interesting venue is San Siro, where a draw is not enough for either team. Expect crazy stuff?

    Inter 0-0 SD
I couldn't understand why Shakhtar were sitting back and time wasting when they were going out with a draw, but then I realized that they were content with a Europa League spot, which is their real level (something Man U still haven't accepted :-)

Borussia's story is quite strange. Going out after squandering multiple late leads, they lose convincingly on the final day but go through because two teams needing a win couldn't muster a single goal between them. Such are strange twists of fate.

Salzburg go out after a valiant effort but a couple of Atletico sucker punches. We've seen this movie before so many times.

Yes it's getting a tad boring.
There are a lot of good teams in the Europa League, and Salzburg are unseeded. Could be a short stay there, also like last year.
Szoboszlai will be gone after the winter break but his form has dipped in the last month anyway.

I have heard quite a few black pundits comment on this incident on TV/podcasts. Almost all (with the exception of John Barnes, see more below) have supported the walk off. Their perspective is that growing up black in Western nations, most of them carry deep psychological baggage of having been singled out as "the black man," whether maliciously or inadvertently, way too many times in their lives. That's what caused the (seemingly to many people) extreme reaction by Webo and Demba Ba. None of them think that the Romanian official was being malicious - but almost all agree that a stand had to be taken so people think more carefully about such things. Personally, and with empathy towards what these pundits have experienced, I think it takes us into tricky territory. As John Barnes pointed out, Webo was the only black man in the 8 person Istanbul coaching staff. Are we not allowed to distinguish someone by race now, be it a black, white, brown, yellow, or green person? This will push the PC-hating crowd further to the right in my opinion, and cause bigger issue in the bigger picture.

Webo should have complained to President Erdogan since his arrival in Turkey on a product that offended the Black race! But every reasonable person understands that rCyNegrorCO is simply a word in the Spanish language. It has no connotations, no intent to offend. It simply means rCyBlackrCO in English.
