I came across this tweet with the list of the top 10 goal contributors for the Brazilian NT:

I initially thought it was bogus, because nobody recorded assists prior to the 1990s (our own Benny used to do it in his Serie A match reports, and it was kind of a new thing). But apparently the journalist has gone through video footage and match reports from the archives of the top Rio and SP papers, and it seems legit:

(with the only exception that the tweet bumped 1950s legend Zizinho off the top-10 list, maybe because it was difficult to find a good image of him?)

This is not quite accurate. The much maligned NASL kept track of these,
for example. Also, for a while in the 80s -- and maybe it went on later
- kicker was keeping track of "Vorlage zum Tur", although it defined
assists a bit more stringently than most people do nowadays. Winning a
FK or penalty certainly did not count - it had to be a key pass.

Given that many sources give assists to people who win penalties or free
kicks from which a goal is scored directly, why do they not award
assists to the goalscorer if the scorer was the person who won that
penalty or free kick ?
