• Women's Euro 2022: Preview

    From Futbolmetrix@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Tue Jul 5 15:58:58 2022
Women's Euro starts tomorrow. The Guardian has some good coverage, as well as some other sites.

    Quickie unsophisticated prediction:

Group A (FIFA rating in parenthesis)
    ENG 1982
    AUT 1784
    NOR 1914
    NIR 1518

England plays at home and are thought to be among the favorites, but the English club teams have been underwhelming in the latest Champions League campaign. Overrated?

Norway has Ada Hegerberg back, that might just be enough to get them through. I know almost nothing about Austria, other than that they made the semis 4 years ago.

    1. Norway
    2. Ingerlund

This was supposed to be the breakout tournament for Spain, for the first time among the favorites. But two of their biggest stars, Jenni Hermoso and FIFA POTY Alexia Putellas will miss out because of injury. The Alexia injury is particularly harsh, as she tore her ACL two days before the start of the tournament. Still, Spain should have enough to beat Denmark to one of the two top spots in the group. The resurgent Germans should get the other.

France, with a backbone made up of players from the dominant Lyon and PSG teams, should be clear favorites here, and they are my overall favorites for the cup, even if they have always disappointed at the NT level. Italy looks like it might have an edge for second place, but some of the key players of this group are on the wrong side of 30, and there isn't too much new blood coming up through the ranks.
    Still, Weaufx Gods be damned:
    1. France
    2. Italy
Which sets up the following QFs:
    Norway-Spain
    Sweden-Italy
    France - Netherlands
    Germany - England
    Semis:
    Spain - Sweden
    France - Germany
    Final:
    Sweden - France
    Winner France.

This is actually starting today, seems a bit out of the ordinary to start on Wednesday, but maybe it is because Wednesday is the new Friday in England. But those who wanted an international football tournament this summer, will be getting one. For those boycotting Qatar, this will be your WC. I dont know how I feel anymore about the whole winter Qatar thing anymore.
Only one game today, England v Austria, then one game tomorrow, N Ireland v Norway. I dont know anything about the Austrian Women, I assume England and Norway would be favourites from this group.

I think you over estimate Germany and under estimate Spain. Spain are clear favourites and Denmark look more likely than Germany to come out of this group.

Yeah I think these two are the likely candidates, I dont know what the Portuguese Women's program is like, but it seems to be far behind the men. DO they even have a Swiss Womens league?

I would say France and then take your guess for second. Iceland would be a nice story if they could do what the men did a few years back. You know how all Icelandic men names end in "son", all the women's names end in "dottir". It is true just look at the roster ( dont know how that Danish girl got on the team?)

First 10 minutes, it's been mostly Austria. But it's Ellen White with the first shot on goal, a tame header lands softly in the Austrian keeper arm.
Finally England starting to shake off its nerves.

And they take the lead in the 16th minute. Kirby dinks the ball beyond the defensive line, nice control by Mead, who lobs it over the keeper. Wenninger's desperate attempt to clear off the line can't beat GLT. Lengthy VAR review for a potential offside (UEFA apparently has decided not to show replays of VAR-sensitive incidents), but the goal stands.

England with yet another big chance at the stroke of half-time, but Zinsberger does well to rush out of her goal and deny Hemp.
    HT: 1-0
After a promising Austrian start, it's been all England. Maybe they were not as bad as I imagined? Austrian ladies mostly feature in the Frauen Bundesliga, and among the top teams there too, but they have not been able to really trouble the Lionesses.

Interestingly, Wales put up much more of a fight against the Norwegians in the qualifying group (losing both matches 1-0), and ended with a much better goal difference. But Northern Ireland went through thanks to the away goals rule in the head to head results: 2-2 in Wales (thanks to a 94th minute equalizer), and 0-0 in Belfast.
Northern Irish coach looking at his watch, but there's still a long time to go...Hegerberg misses a golden chance to make it 3

The big news of the night is that NIR managed to score one (off a corner kick that the Norwegian defense wasn't able to clear properly) and that Ada Hegerberg is blanking.

And that's the full-time score. Looks likely that the outcome of the group will be determined on Match Day 3 in the head to head between Austria and Norway. However, if Norway beats England by 2 goals on July 11, and assuming Austria beats Northern Ireland, there is a potential for a massive Austro-Norwegian biscotto to send the Lionesses out of the tournament.

    57' Finland - Spain 1-2
Finland took a shock lead in the first minute, and everyone was ready with their "Spain will not be able to shale off the Alexia injury." But it didn't take long for the Rojas to establish their dominance and turn things around. Too bad for the Alexia injury, but it looks as if Spain will still be among the favorites for the final win.

FT: Spain wins 4-1. Three headers (two of them from set pieces) and penalty in injury time. They are good, Alexia or no Alexia

    Group B

    Denmark 1873
    Spain 1986

This was supposed to be the breakout tournament for Spain, for the first time among the favorites. But two of their biggest stars, Jenni Hermoso and FIFA POTY Alexia Putellas will miss out because of injury. The Alexia injury is particularly harsh, as she tore her ACL two days before the start of the tournament. Still, Spain should have enough to beat Denmark to one of the two top spots in the group. The resurgent Germans should get the other.
    So:
    1. Germany
    2. Spain

    Group C:
    Netherlands 2013
    Sweden 2061
    Switzerland 1796
    Portugal 1679

Group with the biggest gap in Elo ratings between the top 2 and the bottom 2. A cakewalk for Euro champs and WC runners-up Netherlands and OG silver medalists Sweden?

    1. Sweden
    2. Netherlands
Netherlands v Sweden tonight. Probably the best 2 teams at the Olympics. That one should be fun. Especially if the Netherlands carry on scoring and conceding goals as much as they did at the Olympics. If I remember correctly, their matches then finished 10-3, 3-3, 8-2 and 2-2!

About a week ago, the English Press seemed to have England winning this Euro Championship, but then they realized teams like Norway and Germany and Spain and France are also playing in this Euro and the tone seems to have changed. England now is "Determined to stop formidable Norway".
I think England should be favourite for this cup as host and having a good win record, but if they dont beat Norway, or at least a convincing draw, then forget it. I wont begrudge Austria and Norway dong whatever it take to get both of them through at Englands expense, even if they pass the ball around for 90 minutes without crossing half after Austria takes a 1-0 lead in the first minute.

    Fun Fact:
Highest defeat Norwegian WNT: 0-8 v England (2022)
Highest defeat English WNT: 0-8 v Norway (2000)

I don't assume there's any other case where two NT's record defeats are against one another?

After yesterdays game, England have to be huge favourites to win it all. In the top match of group B, Germany lead Spain 2-0 at the half, I just started to watch when the Horst Hrubesch female equivalent headed in the second goal around the 36min. Germany will want to win in order to avoid England in the next round .
Denmark beat Finland 1-0 earlier to keep their hopes alive.

Germans defended adequately enough, which in feminine terms means they were great defensively. They "hang on" for the 2-0FT. Some Neueresque keeping by the German keeper, she looks the best keeper I have seen yet. Spain moved the ball around well enough, just no finish. I think this result means Germany have won the group and thus avoid Engerlund?

Disapppointing result for Italy, but it keeps the azzurre still in the thick of the qualifying picture. Assuming France takes care of business against Belgium and Iceland, a win against Belgium will be enough for second place.
Iceland went ahead in the third minute. I caught most of the second half, Italy dominated possession, and created some good chances (including a post by Bonansea). But they also need to thank their lucky stars for two or three huge misses by the Icelandic girls. Vilhj|ilmsd||ttir was guilty of particularly bad one in the 88th minute, and couldn't contain her desperation.

It would be very easy for the Misogynists to write off women's football as some 3rd rate soccer imitation like MLS, they would point out such things as the last minute penalty in the game between the Dames and the Belgettes as proof of its inferior product. But I am not like that, you have to appreciate it for what it is, which I wont get into for the sake of diplomacy.
Last round of group stages games and they are all being played at the same time, even though not necessary, since women dont cheat like men. All the teams that you think are going to go through, look like they will go through, except for maybe Austria, all they need is a draw vs either a very deflated group of kvinne or a riled up group after the big loss vs the lasses.
Spain and Denmark play tomorrow for second place in the group.
Neddies and Svergettes should qualify, unless one of them loses the next day and after that it s France and one other team going through, which might be Iceland if the Dames take it easy on the dotirs.

Wait, whaaat, the 2nd div already started today!??!?!?! It is like 30C at night, it is early July, WTF!??!?!?! Here is my prediction of the day
Kaiserslautern gets promoted to the 1st div before Hamburgo.
Anyhow, chick soccer is the topic, Austria did more than enough to take 2nd spot and eliminate Norway with a commanding 1-0, they could be a dark horse in this thing. Except the QF match is against Germany, which is the biggest rivalry or derby or whatever you wanna call it, in all of football. THe oldest rivalry in the world, they been playin this since before Jebus was born! I can guaranty you the scribblers will be getting the 1978 references out by tomorrow.

It was a very dull grey kit, maybe meant to blend into the English backdrop of wet, grey skies, except that England is as hot and sunny as the Iceberg, I think we are going up to 34C here today and the match in Manchester will be around 30C with the earlier kick off.

Coming from the Sepp Blatter school of female kit design, with all that heat, I think they should wear something lighter, maybe a bikini like kit for games when it is this hot or maybe just wrapped in light silky scarves, you know cus of the heat, then during the water breaks, happening every 5 minutes, they could pour ice cod water over each others bodies and wipe down with the scarves. Not my ideas, just trying to incorporated what Sepp Blatter would have wanted.
Anyhow, Blatter wet dreams aside, Spain won with a late goal, I did not really watch much of the match, but Spain had 75% possession, made around 800 passes and won 1-0 with a 90th minute goal. THis means they will play England and if the English women are like the men, they will knock out the Lioneses, who will get nervous and screw themselves up as per English football design.
Should be straight forward today, Holland and Sweden to win, with the winner with the highest goal margin to avoid France, so I would think they will both want to run up the score. I think Portugal might have a chance to pull an upset, but not too likely.
Tomorrow Belgium v Italy to decide second place, unless they draw, then I think the dotirs of Iceland advances.

Make that 6. England now equalling their highest ever Euro win.

This is only to get my hopes up for the Norway game.....

Obviously the Gods don't care about the women's euro.

If it's allowed once the tournament's started, doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a squad? Surely the whole point is that you've already got cover for injuries?

I wonder who the Berti Vogts female equivalent is?
    Denmark - Spain

Why are Spain wearing what looks like a Uruguay or Argentina away kit? I mean I know itrCOs their second kit, but why those colours?

Makes it look like a World Cup, not a Euros!

    RM
It was a very dull grey kit,
Looked light blue to me? I looked it up on the Adidas website and they describe it as rCLglow bluerCY, whatever thatrCOs meant to be.
I would say the look I got from watching on tv was a mix of Uruguay light blue and white or grey, I thought it looked dull, not glowing blue, but then again, like most men I am colour blind, the women watching probably thought it was a dazzling kit, I thought it just looked out of place as a kit colour, especially for Spain, kinda boring and dull. I suppose some may say Spain's style of play is boring and dull, lots of possession, but not much end product.
Plenty of end product from the Dutchies and Sweedie pies as they took care of biz, both winning easily. SO la Grande dames will play the Dutchies and we find out today if it will be Belgium Icelandia or Italia vs the Swedes. Regardless of which team it is, Sweden is in the Semi finals.
Meanwhile in big transfer news, Lewa is going to Barca (where did they get the money?) and Bayern will spend that money on De Ligt.

    RM
maybe meant to blend into the English backdrop of wet, grey skies, except that England is as hot and sunny as the Iceberg, I think we are going up to 34C here today and the match in Manchester will be around 30C with the earlier kick off.

    FT: ITA - BEL 0-1

Given Iceland's equalizer in the 12th minute of injury time, all Italy needed was a late equalizer for the reverse biscotto.
In the end it was Belgium who made it to the QFs, taking advantage of Italy's ineptitude in front of goal, and more "hunger" to win two 50-50 balls on the edge of the Italian box in the move that led to their goal.

Very disappointing Euro for the azzurre. Given Juve's excellent run in the CL, I expected more.

The match stats suggest France controlled the game with 200 more passes made, 68% possession and twice as many shots. Still, it is a shame that the dottirs of Icelandia go out without losing a game.

You would think so, but the bookies at BET365, have today's match as the closest according to the odds. I dunno, like I said earlier, if the English women are like the men, they will lose, otherwise I think they win easily. Bookies have England and Germany as favourites to win it all.
Bookies have Germany and Sweden winning their QFs easily. On the kicker website, I think it was 93% surveyed thought Germany would beat Austria, but they will all be wrong. France is a healthy favourite for their match, but I am not convinced.

0-0 at the half. Physical game, I noticed vs Germany that these Senoritas are hard, some might say dirty, not me, women dont have it in them to play dirty. The Woman Spain team play a lot like the old tiki taki, win 1-0 Man Spain team of the early century. France scores three times. First time in first minute. Second
time around minute 60 but VAR logically canceled it due to an
offside. Third time around minute 89 with Grace Geyoro pushing
the ball inside the net. Checked by the VAR, the videos shows
that Geyoro, completely rolled and tackled to ground by her
opponent and hand on the body success to score but the referee
decide to cancel the goal because of an handball nobody saw
clearly but did not see any penalty...

During injuring time, a French player is thrown out to
advertising panels while jumping by an Icelandic player already
    yellow-carded but no foul...

And two minutes and half after the end of extra time, an
Icelandic player pushed Sarr to another Icelandic player and
make her fall. No doubt for the slut Adamkova, it is penalty...

The refeereing is a joke in this Euro. In first game versus
Italy, a clear red card legally given has been converted into
yellow with the VAR. Tonight, a clear foul on the Spanish
defender allows the equalizer and deny the qualification to
    Spain.

All this is a joke. Make a game between England and Germany and
give the trophy to the winner, no need to give hope to other

It seems a lot of people, mostly Spanish or at least Basque are calling for a foul on the English goal. I didnt think so, the ref wasnt calling that all game anyway, so at least she was consistent. the Senoritas were the dirtier of the two, always niggly fouling the old English Grandmas and she let a lot of that go, so your conspiracy needs more juice for that one.
Anyhow, the biggest rivalry in International football in store for today, made even bigger with the death of another true German legend, Uwe Seeler died today, must have died from a broken heart the way HSV have been going lately. Personally, I think 85 years old, is a good age and a long life.
So Germany is huge favourites, but I am thinking Austria will be up for it and defend the shit out of them, of course the minute Germany score, it will be all over.

That's what I would have thought too, but the Austrian Frauen are putting up a decent fight. Unfortunately, they only have three woodworks to show for their effort, and in the past few minutes it's Germany who looks to be much closer to a second goal.

That's what I would have thought too, but the Austrian Frauen are putting up a decent fight. Unfortunately, they only have three woodworks to show for their effort, and in the past few minutes it's Germany who looks to be much closer to a second goal.

    73' GER-AUT 1-0

    87' 2-0

Austria tries to build from the back, and Popp susccessfully blocks the Austrian goalie's attempted clearance and the ball slowly rolls into the back of the net.

Austria had given Germany a scare at the beginning of the second half, but eventually ran out of steam.

We took the match to the Germans (something they definitely didn't expect) and hit the woodwork three times. There's not much more to ask for.
The only thing that annoys me is that we finally also conceded one of those stupid goals that are still too endemic in women's football. You could
see it coming from miles away... Zinsberger really should have known better.

The important thing now will be to qualify for the World Cup for the first time. With a similar performance like at the Euro, and the proper lessons
learned, we needn't be afraid of any opponent in the play-offs.

About those stupid goals...the lob from way out is definitely a deliberate tactic that more and more players are trying. It makes no sense with 1.90m male goalies, but certainly has a place in the game with 1.70m female goalies.

France dominated the Netherlands, but only managed a 1-0 win thanks to a penalty in extra-time. Now the Germans will get to play them with two days' rest, and 30 fewer minutes in their legs.

    Semifinals:
    England-Sweden
    Germany-France

All the top seeds make it to the semis...this wouldn't have been a good SophCon for Aggie

    Woof woof!

Actually, it's more like the end of an era. Sweden are the only survivor from back when
women's football still had a distinct advantage in the North, and it feels like it's only a matter
of time until they fall by the wayside like Norway did.

The future will be exactly like men's football, with the Big 5 dominating, just as in club football
where that's already long the case.

Germany, deservedly, is the second finalist. Two great centerforward goals by Alexandra Popp.
I get the feeling that the word "1966" will appear frequently in coverage of the euro final in the English press.

Well, no amount of Anti-Weauxfing will change the fact that Italy will always be Big 5 due to size of population.

But I realise I've been quite UEFA-centric (well, it is the Euro we were talking about). Canada are of course the other holdout
from among those who had a head start in the development of women's football.

Have you looked at the latest numbers on Italy's total fertility rate? (Yes, it will take a while for the population to shrink relative to other European countries. But also, why has Italy been so poor in integrating its immigrant population in the NT, both men and women?)

In terms of population, Canada (38m) would be the 6th member of the Big 5. Not sure I understand why they've still been trotting out Christine Sinclair (unless she's just out to get to 200 international goals...)

I don't think she is negative influence quite yet. She allegedly makes
the players around her better. And she is still a few months younger
than Atiba, who I presume will retire after the world cup (whether he
gets to play in it or not - he might well miss out due to injury or form).

It seems a lot of people, mostly Spanish or at least Basque
are calling for a foul on the English goal. I didnt think
so, the ref wasnt calling that all game anyway, so at least
she was consistent. the Senoritas were the dirtier of the
two, always niggly fouling the old English Grandmas and she
let a lot of that go, so your conspiracy needs more juice for
