    I think nerves have more to do with the lack of scintillation than heat and humidity. Aussies had a decent chance towards the end and dare I say look more likely to win it.

    Yeah, I had that thought too. But then I guess playing a full programme of matches in the summer with kickoff times at midday and 3pm is different to playing one game per evening at 10pm.

    I would not be surprised if FIFA doesn't create something like the Sean Avery Rule in the NHL.

    were still on the line or as near as makes no difference.

    That is my thought, some of the run ups nowadays are as ridiculous as a keeper doing Disco dancing on the line (though on one of the kicks he actually was spinning around and facing away from the kicker). Maybe if they choreographed a bit better between shooters and keepers it would be more fun. I did not see any real advantage the keeper was getting doing all his dance moves on the line, while a shooter stopping and starting can derive a real advantage.
    In my day a keeper might try and psyche you out a bit by positioning himself to one side, but we did not do any choreographed run-ups either. You always feigned your run by making it look like you were going one way with the shot, but that was it, as a right footer, I would almost always look to be going to the keepers left with my run and then go to his right, always just inside the post, nothing could stop that-well except maybe the post, or mis hitting the shot or a keeper not falling for it, but no as I recall, it never failed.

    When those kind of shenanigans are allowed, you have to keep a closer eye on the keeper at that point.

    The problem is, Law 14 actually requires the goalkeeper to stay on his line from the point the command is given to take the kick.

    To my understanding, the "dead stop" to try to screw the keeper's timing IS, in fact, not legal.

    If you could point that out, that's also an infringement. But if it was on a successful take, the infringement is then ignored.
