• Scotland - Ukraine World Cup Playoff [R]

    From Real Mardin@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Tue May 31 14:48:09 2022
Forgive me for opening this thread a day early, but the prospect of a World Cup playoff match in a month where we're going to be denied our usual Summer World Cup was too much to resist.
Please also forgive me for referencing non-football politics, but Scotland are the pantomime villains for the day, aren't they? Given the torrid time Ukraine has had recently, most people who aren't Scottish or Russian want Ukraine to win, don't they? I mean Ukraine qualifying for Qatar 2022 would be an incredible story and might actually make the tournament worth watching.
The winners play Wales in Cardiff on Sunday.

Nothing against Scotland (or eventually Wales, which hosts the Final of this pod) in that regard at all.

Well, they won Eurovision, right ? Maybe they'll win the World Cup too. Wouldn't surprise me (too much).
On a different note, isn't there at least some chance that the Cup won't be played in winter because of another covid outbreak ? That would be something. Can't be held in summer because of the heat, in winter because of the virus. Let's see, maybe it doesn't happen.

If they were smart, but it's clear they aren't. I think it's becoming clear that we are about to, if not in the nascent beginnings of, get(ting) the culling that a lot of people wanted COVID to provide!

I want to be very clear that I didn't mean it like this. As a conspiracy theory. But it might happen. Moving the Cup in winter might prove not to be the best idea in the age of covid. Hopefully it doesn't come to this.

If they win their way in, they'd be in the group with the USA, which actually has a fairly easy draw in the knockouts for whoever wins the England group.

Unexpected shot, but I think that one would've gone back anyway had it gone in the net, not dissimilar to the deflection call in the first half of the CL Final. I think that was a deflection and not a deliberate play.

    Goal Ukraine!!

The 9 for Ukraine was slightly offside on a long pass from the defensive half, but the 7 was the one who beat the trap as the 9 got out of the way of the play.

0-1 (Yarmolenko) 35th minute to the Ukraine!

I get why you are saying it, but I do disagree. This is one of those situations I call back on my fandom of Final Fantasy -- Final Fantasy X to be specific, and that, even though there is a monster which can annihilate entire cities at it's election, "At least we still have blitz."
    -------
As for the game, a deserved 0-1 to the Ukranians at halftime.
It's a nervy game, and there's a very real chance that either side could end up a man short by it's end. Ukraine, however, do have the better of the play, and a nice beating of the offside trap for the goal.

TheyrCOve done it! Counter attack puts Dobyk (sp?) through and he finds the net to put Ukraine 3-1 up with the last kick of the game!
Scotland - your time will come.
Ukraine - your time is now.

Think of this scary possibility: They win the pod on Sunday, but, by late November, cease to exist.

    What does FIFA do then?

For three months they've impressively repelled the Russian invasion, by and large the only places they've lost ground are those Eastern territories where Russia already had a foothold.

However this war ends Ukraine is not going to cease to exist by Qatar 2022.

    We can only hope.
Mike (I do wonder if Putin is playing the long game, seeing the political situation in the USA and thinking Trump will retake power and end NATO when he does. Otherwise, why has he not tac-nuked an Ukrainian city, especially after the sinking of one of his lead ships?)

    1-3 FT. Wales-Ukraine on Sunday.

If the same victor after the Cardiff game, then it STINKS! But, hey, thatrCOs the new norm. Think of the Oskars! ItrCOs no longer about merit rCo itrCOs all about feel-good religious-ideology.
IrCOm surprised no government forced their citizens to watch the Glasgow match and cheer Team Ukraine via social media!

Plus the south. Ukraine is practically cut off from the sea.
If the russians had really wanted it, there would be no Ukraine to talk of now. But I agree they probably won't finish it off this time around. They'll leave it crippled and conditioned to not join NATO and not host any weapons that could be dangerous to Russia. And this time there will be a written treaty to it.
So, as a consolation, they'll give them a place at the World Cup, like they gave them the lame Eurovision. I honestly hope not more than that. I won't mind seeing them in the groups instead of another team that would have deserved it more football-wise, but not in the KO rounds.
