What if we change the rule so that it's not offside if both the passer and the receiver were in the penalty area?

What would be gained by this?

What specific problem is it trying to address?

It would make defending corners more difficult, as defenders would not
so easily be able to push out stranding attackers offside.

I remember a trial rule that was kind of the opposite = you could only
be offside if you were IN the penalty area. Was used in something like
the Texaco cup in the 70s.

The offside rule was introduced to discourage players from hanging at their opponentrCOs goal. I can't imagine a situation where it would be considered "hanging" if both passer and receiver were inside the penalty area.

For example, no one in their right mind would say Benzema was "hanging at the goal area", even if it was Valverde that passed the ball to him.
