• 2022 Oceanian Women's Nations Cup

    From Mark@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Mon May 30 04:37:41 2022
Is it the Oceanian Women's Nations Cup, or the Women's Oceanian Nations Cup or what?

Anyway, because of New Zealand not playing in it for some bizarre reason, I'm declaring my pre-season prediction for it void, and replacing it with a new prediction, for the same tournament. I hereby predict that Papua New Guinea will win it.

9 teams, in 3 groups of 3, everybody goes through to the quarter-finals, so why bother to play the 1st round? The top 2 in each group plus the 2 best 3rd place teams go through. So literally only 1 team gets eliminated.

And then of course there's the ridiculousness of New Zealand, by far the best team in Oceania, not even playing in it. It's enough to make you wonder whether it's worth bothering to play the tournament at all.

It's the Championship of a continent though, so I think it's worth starting a thread on rss about it.

I predict that Solomon Islands will be the team that gets knocked out in the 1st round. Even if they go through I'll be able to claim I correctly predicted 7 of the 8 quarter-finalists.

It starts today. So we'll have the Championship of 5 different continents all going on at the same time now.

Mind you, the 1st round's hardly worth bothering to follow. The tournament really starts properly (when the quarter-finals start) on July 23.

I correctly predicted 7 of the 8 quarter-finalists. Solomon Islands are undefeated so far. Their 2 draws got them through by 1 point.

Solomon Islands, who I predicted would go out in the 1st round, are still unbeaten. They beat former Oceanian Champions Tahiti in the quarter-finals.

Perhaps the surprise of the tournament is Samoa, 1 of the weakest teams according to the FIFA rankings, reaching the semi-finals.

My tip to win the tournament, Papua New Guinea, are through to the final, where they play Fiji, the host country.

The 2nd and 3rd lowest rated teams in the FIFA rankings, Solomon Islands and Samoa, are playing each other for 3rd place.

The 2nd lowest ranked team in the FIFA rankings that started the tournament, Solomon Islands, end 3rd.

And my prediction is correct. Papua New Guinea are Champions of Oceania!

So, Solomon Islands, ranked 119 in the world, end 3rd, and New Zealand didn't even make it to the quarter-finals. What does that say about New Zealand?
