Outside of the Real v Chelsea match up, these quarter finals look kinda boring. I guess it might be interesting to see what Pep does with fake 9s or ersatz 6s or plagiarized 11s, he always likes to do those kinda things around this time in the UCL. I think Bernardo is the fake 9 and Ilkay is the ersatz 6 possibly Sterling or Stones is the plagiarized 11

Liverpool easily taking care of business in Lisbon, 2-0 up after 35 minutes. I'm keeping an eye on Guardiola vs Simeone, and for the moment the Atleti bus has kept City very quiet.

A bit like a defending practice drill, with the red bibs defending and the blue bibs attacking. Not really attacking well though, no real chances, they seem to be looking for penalty calls more than goal chances.

On the surface, one might say that against the big, bad, and rich Man City, poor Simone did not have a choice but to put 11 players behind the ball. But a glance at Transfermarkt shows that their squad is valued at 665M Euro, so we aren't talking Leganes or Burnley here. Zero shots yesterday. Not one the entire game.
Simone is a disgrace to football.

Should be more interesting today, though Bayern are heavy favourites for an away game. CONCACAF most rocking footballer of the Year winner, should be back on the bench. Seems like he has been out for a long time. I just hope this has all been caution with Davies and it is not some weird covid thing.
I get the feeling Real gets a point in London, they are old cagey veterans.

Benzema with two well placed headers, and Real is up 2-0. Vini also hit the woodwork when the score was still 0-0, following a superb Benzema backheel that split open the Chelsea defense.

Davies doesnt look like the only Bayern player who has not played in 4 months. Neuer and Bayern saved by the VARobots, shoulda, coulda ,woulda been 2-0 at the half and woulda been deserved.
Bayern to sneak in a 12 player at the start of the half.

Not out of it, but you couldn't see Chelsea keeping a clean sheet in

Madrid have been riding two major waves in the CL - the brilliance of Benzema and the charity of their opponents. Neutralize even one of those and they are quite beatable.

Back at it again. Bayern have to make up that goal and will be happy the away goal rules does not exist anymore. The old UCL veterans have to hold a two goal lead and will be unhappy the away goals rule does not exist anymore.

Davies on the bench for Bayern, I just dont think Bayern have looked good this year, I can see them getting knocked out tonight. I excpect Real to hang on and get through, even if they lose tonight.

Davies on the bench for Bayern, I just dont think Bayern have looked good this year, I can see them getting knocked out tonight. I excpect Real to hang on and get through, even if they lose tonight.

Chelsea is also happy that AGR is no more. They are 1-0 up after only 15 minutes. Game on.

Villarreal with a very tactical approach and by tactical I mean they resorted to time wasting since around the 5th minute. The game more or less being played in the Villareal half, but Bayern have not really had a good chance. I will say this again:
I have never seen Sane have a good game for Bayern.
    Bayern 45 minutes from elimination.

Now Marcos Alonso makes it 3-0, but VARobotos will call it off? Indeed they do. Stupid rule that any handball touch by the goalscorer leads automatically to the goal being disallowed.

Still 3-3. On the restart, Benzema hits the crossbar.

That free header by Havertz was still a big chance.

Happy about the outcome, really want for Modric to get another CL,

Only Modric and Vrsaljko left for us in the cup, 9 year streak

Real remind me of Man Utd of last season. No real control or authority over the games, just individual moments of brilliance coupled with a healthy amount of luck.

    April 13th matches:

Man City at full strength, pretty much. Gundogan playing, B. Silva
pushed further forward, according to the team sheet. Atletico as expected.

Liverpool have rested Salah, Man|-, Fabinho, Thiago, Van Dijk, Robertson,
and Alexander Arnold (all on the bench, though). Presumably this is to
save them all for the FA cup semifinal vs. City. Klopp might finally be taking the FA cup seriously - perhaps the league cup win has changed his perspective.

I think Villarreal showed yesterday they are better at playing "tactical" football then Atletico now. Hope this goes to 1-1 agg and 50 cards flying. Except that Atleti dont even play their "tactical" football very well anymore. They would probably do better to just come out and attack.

I know these managers are tactical masterclass geniuses, but Simeone may need to be reminded that he needs a goal. Though it could be all about tactics and he is waiting to score late in the match, now that would be a tactical masterclass. 0-0 ht

Schadenfreude. I dont know why, maybe just the richness of the club, but I somehow take joy in Man City continuously failing in the UCL.

At the moment Atletico actually pressing forward and coming close to that goal they need. Old man Suarez coming on for the last 15 mins

I dont like this Man City team, something wierd about them and I dont mean the fake 9 thing.
I think Liverpool has this cup or Villarreal play the Villarrns in the script, which might happen, but no, they cant stop Liverpool's attack, they have too many ways to score.
It is not a party until the Cops get called-which apparently they were for a tunnel party.
Atleti could have actually won it if they had decided to attack in the first half.

Man City is dislikable for many reasons, but what I respect them (or more specifically, Pep) for is that they are a scintillating football machine which is delightful to watch from an aesthetic standpoint. Also, despite their enormous financial outlay, they don't necessarily go for the shiniest objects, but more players suited to their system.
Atletico is the polar opposite, hell bent on doing anything and everything unsavory to gain an advantage. Yes, it brings a different kind of theatric entertainment with it, but it is still based on destruction rather than creation. Not to mention again, all that with a squad valued at over half a billion.
