• Euro 2028 and 2032 bidding

    From Real Mardin@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Thu Mar 24 15:57:44 2022
So the deadline for applying to host has passed and UEFA has received the following expressions of interest:
    2028: UK & ROI joint bid / Turkey / Russia (!!)
    2032: Italy / Turkey / Russia (!!!)
Turkey has had five previous unsuccessful bids: 2000, 2008 (application to co-host with Greece), 2016, 2020 (seemed to be the front running bid before UEFA decided to change to a multi host format) and 2024. Frankly, it's getting to the stage where if they don't get either 2028 or 2032 it's going to start looking a bit impolite.
However, UK & ROI withdrew their bid to host the 2030 World Cup in order to focus on bidding for Euro 2028, both due to perceived issues with their chances of success of landing the World Cup but also because a feasibility study showed that the economic benefit of hosting Euro 2028 would be felt sooner. This saved UEFA the difficulty of UK & ROI going against the Spain & Portugal World Cup 2030 bid and potentially dividing support for a UEFA World Cup. It is possible that politics will come into play and UEFA will look upon UK & ROI not opposing Spain & Portugal as the UEFA World Cup 2030 bid favourably.
My prediction, for what it's worth, is that UK & ROI will land Euro 2028 and Turkey will finally get to host a Euros in 2032.
As for Russia, well, I don't know whether to be disgusted or admire their bare faced cheek. One wonders whether they're already planning on including Mariupol and Kyiv as host venues?

Yeah, I think the UK/Ireland bid for Euro 2028 will succeed...

If it wasn't such a serious situation in Ukraine, Russia putting in a
bid to host the Euro 2028 tournament would have been one of the
funniest things I've ever read. I'd like to think that the guy in the
Russian Football Union behind the application was having a laugh
anyway. As there can't be any other reason for such an insane bid at
    this moment in time.

    2032: Italy

fortunately there is the rule that host nation is automatically qualified,
so the azzurri team will be (finally) in a WC <grin>

Which means you can remove Russia from both lists. UEFA has disqualified both bids.
