• WM 2022-Qualifikation finale

Another international break, the last one with the final World Cup qualifying week, almost.
Out of Africa, the final 5 will be decided this week, home and away games Friday and next Tuesday. Some interesting matches. Revenge for Egypt?
    DR Kongo vs Marokko
    Kamerun vs Algerien
    Mali vs Tunesien
    |agypten vs Senegal
    Ghana vs Nigeria
UEFA is all complicated by the War, Ukrania may play Scotland in June, if it is still standing or a country anymore. That Putin fella really is a bad egg.
So we have 12 second place teams competing for 3 spots. From what I understand, only single games ( no home and away) not sure how home teams were decided. Russian Federation of Footballers thrown out so Poland got a bye.
    WAL/AUT
    SCO/UKR
Can Austria make it out of these four? Not impossible
    Polen vs
    SWE/CZE
    POR/TUR vs
    ITA/MKD
Probably the most interesting pairing, one assume Portugal and Italy come through to play next week
Asia is almost decided, South Korea and Iran qualify from group A, so Group A is done. Group B is interesting and it is between Japan, Saudi Arabia and Australia. If I understand correctly the top two are automatically qualified and the third will go into an inter continental match with the South America 5th place.

    3 Australien 8 9 15
    4 Oman 8 -2 8
    5 China 8 -8 5
    6 Vietnam 8 -10 3
Australia's two remaining games are against Japan and S arabia, so if Japan and S Arabia win their other match, then Australia could be tied with Japan and decided by whatever method the use to decide. All very complex, not to mention, how do you know that Australia will beat them?.
South America final two games. Brazil and Argentina qualified, Ecuador at least make the inter continental play off, so two spots left, I would say between Peru Chile, Uruguay and maybe Colombia. It is all very complicated and not looking good for Chile

And the most Rockingest confederation is set for the most dramatic and rocking finale any Confederation could hope for. We are so rocking that they are somehow gonna fit 3 games in this international break, all the other weak and puny confederations only play two games, and CONCACAF is like ten time bigger than any other continent, the travel alone would kill any other confederation, so you can really see just how rocking we are in CONCACAF.
Never been a war in CONCACAF either, well except for that war that was actually caused by a CONCACAF game, but otherwise we just rock and love and peace, maybe smoke a bit of ganja, have a few Banks beer and then cram 3 matches in a week.
Canada needs maybe one point from those 3 games. As an example of travel distances, Canada will play in COsta Rica late Thursday night, then come all the way back to Canada (around a 22 hour flight direct) for Sunday to play against Jamaica, (Spring has ended and winter has returned here, so it might be a bit of an ice or snow game) and then back on the bike and row boat and back to Panama for Wednesday night. Kinda tough games especially since Panama and Costa Rica needs wins. Jamaica is already out and hopefully Kanada gets their point or points from that match.
USA play Mexico in one of the matches, I think a draw in that match would qualify Canada as well? USA actually have some tough matches as well and of the three (CAN MEX USA) look the most likely not to make it. Worst case scenario for Kanada is the intercontinental play off vs New Zealand. Panama or Costa Rica will be 4th. Again, this is all very complex and cant be understood, by non CONCACAFians.
Oh yeah, that Oceanai group I think is still going on and will be won by New Zealand at some point if not already won by them.

Unsurprisingly, FIFA are making a mess of things regarding the draw, and I guess we could actually have a group with four UEFA teams in it?

I thought the best 3rd place team goes directly vs the S American team, but as MH said, they have the match vs the other 3rd place team in Qatar, which based upon Syria leading Lebanon 3-0 in the 60 min, looks like it will be UAE. So yeah, Asia more or less decided with out much complexity.

Australians conceding two late goals at home. I was reminded of 1997, but of course
that was an actual do-or-die situation.
Australia in a play-off against CONMEBOL, what could go wrong?
I guess it depends on the opponent. I don't know much about the current Australian team,
but Elo Ratings seems to suggest that any of Uruguay, Peru, Chile or Colombia would be a
tough match for them. Then again, it is a single leg affair now.

The front 6 is basically the starting lineup from the Euros, while the back line is almost entirely new: Bonucci is still nursing an injury, Chiellini is on the bench and is probably being saved for the next game, Di Lorenzo is out with a long-term injury. but Emerson and Florenzi were part of the squad at the Euros.
Hopefully this is enough for North Macedonia, but the lack of attacking talent will make everything difficult.

TransferMarkt values of some "randomly" selected UEFA WCQ (today's starting lineups):
    Italy 43.1
    Portugal 36.6
When you break it down by defense (GK + defenders) and attack (midfield+forwards)
    Italy: DEF 37.6, ATT 47.7

Of course we are still a long way away from a Portugal-Italy matchup for the last playoff spot.
Italy still dominating possession, but their best chance has come off a hospital pass by the Macedonian goalkeeper, Berardi in front of an open goal kindly returned the hospital pass back to the goalie.
Italy collecting a lot of corners, which then turn to naught as the French referee calls Italian fouls

    Wales 1 - 0 Austria ht
Not a very Rocking performance by Austria, Sabitzer hit the post early, but it has been Wales dominating almost every aspect of the match. Kind of needless foul leading to the Wales goal, which was a nice free kick by Bale. Do we actually know why Bale does not get picked by Real for what seems the last 5 years.

In a friendly, Scotland lead Poland 1-0. But Poland will now introduce Lewandowski who will promptly score a hat-trick.

This was a very hastily arranged Friendly due to the cancellation of
Poland- Russia, and postponement of Scotland - Ukraine. Scotland next
plays a friendly against the loser of Wales-Austria.

He did indeed blast the penalty over the bar, which is a shame, but as big a story is the lengths the Turkish players had to go to get the referee to check VAR for what was a very obvious looking penalty. It was actually eventually given after the ref allowed play to move on, which given the position and what was at stake beggars belief. This is the second time Turkey have had to protest vigorously for their rights, the same thing happened in the qualification match against Latvia. It should not take so many players to protest to get the officials to give a fair decision.
Still, the result is a relief in a way, it gives me one less reason to be committed to the carnival of awfulness that is the Desert World Cup Christmas Special.

Yes, Sweden were boring but stuck to their plan of boring the opponents to death. They might do the same to Poland as well :-)

Italy going out is a shocker... I can't believe they won the Euros just a few months ago! Hats off to Macedonia... little nation, big heart. Glad Austrians are out... they had no right to be there anyway. And glad Turkey are out too.

    Gr. B
    Pl. Team Sp. Diff. Pkt.
    1 Saudi-Arabien 8 5 19
    2 Japan 8 6 18

It is not looking good for Chile at all. It was just a matter of time before Brazil was going to score and they did it twice at the end of the half. Elsewher home teams all leading 1-0 at the half

    Uruguay
    vs
    Peru
    1-0
If nothing changes Uruguay are through. I mean stuff could change and they would still be through

    Kolumbien
    vs
    Bolivien
    1-0

    Brasilien
    vs
    Chile
    2-0

    Paraguay
    vs
    Ecuador
    1-0

    Argentinien
    vs
    Venezuela

    Venezuela
    vs
    Kolumbien

    Bolivien
    vs
    Brasilien

    Ecuador
    vs
    Argentinien

    Peru
    vs
    Paraguay

    Chile
    vs
    Uruguay

It is not looking good for Chile at all. It was just a matter of time before Brazil was going to score and they did it twice at the end of the half. Elsewher home teams all leading 1-0 at the half

How did group B play 3 games in one day?????

I dont understand all this "Oh it wont be a real World Cup without Italy" nonsense. I like the idea they are not in it, I would embrace Brazil or Germany not qualifying, things do change, you dont own slaves anymore, you dont throw your poo out a window, you dont pray to some fake God anymore, we evolve from our backwards ways. I can not wait for the day Cook Islands play Martinque in a WM final.

Lleo posted the scores about S America, so you can read that post. let me say I am just disgusted at how Brazil ran up the score against Chile, they had no reason, it does nothing, they were qualified months ago.
Asia is all but decided Japan, Korea, Iran and Saudi are in, Ausies will play some one from Asia to see if they can play someone from S America.
CONCACAF Rocks on for another day, nothing decided yet, we are exactly where we were a year ago when all this started, that is how tight it is. If Canada does not beat Jamaica (and they will) it will be just too damn Rocking for the final day that I doubt anyone will be able to watch.
Africa on today, I like the match ups.

The Pharaohs revenge happened early in the match (3min), and Egypt looked to score more, but by the second half the curse of the Pharaohs looked like it had re appeared, Senegal came close, many times right to the very end, but could not score. Oceania is the rockingest confederation. FIVE games fitted in between March 17 and March 30! Cook islands and Vanuatu withdrew because of Covid 19 outbreaks in the squads! New Zealand only won 1-0 against Papua New Guinea, but as you say, will still win it.
You do realize Papua New Guinea's population is actually bigger than New Zealand's?

    Tchau!
    Jesus "little known facts!" Petry

Why are New Zealand so much better at football then?

Lots more European immigrants from countries with an association
football culture? Better facilities and infrastructure ?

Solomon Islands will play New Zealand for the Oceania crown and the right to play the 4th place CONCACAF team, which will not be Canada. Well, it shouldn't be but we still have 45 minutes to go before I can say that with 100% certainty.
Canada not playing Canadian Catenaccio, maybe Canadian Cattenaccio was never really a thing? Maybe they just were hanging on for dear life and got lucky defending? In the last two games I would say Canada is playing the attacking style they should be playing as their good players are mostly if not all attackers. Tejan looking good in this game. No Davies, but apparently he is back training at Bayern and may even be on the bench for Bayern next week.

The world has long given up having a principled stand, we just say "oh its terrible" and forget it about the issue within 1 minute, hell we dont even want to upset Putin and Russia by making any attempt to help Ukrania.

Anyhow, Canada in the Winter Desert Cup, 4-0 win almost assures top of the group, for whatever that is worth.

Costa Rica leading 2-1 in El Salvador, which puts a bit of pressure on the USA and Mexico.
El Salvador denied a good penalty shout, still 2-1 63 min. A Mexico and USA loss today would put them all on 22 points with Panama at 21. Mexico wont lose, USA might, but if they dont, then everything is more or less settled.

OK, last two days to decide who advances to the Desert WC.
Oceania who only get a 0.5 spot, will probably only get a 0.0 spot. WE all think it will be New Zealand playing Costa Rica and it probably will be that, but New Zealand only beat Tahiti 1-0 while Solomon Islands beat them 3-1, so if we can take anything from that, it may not be straight forward for them. They will be playing Costa Rica. The CONCACAF Rocking ride is over, the last day cant really see anything rocking happening, USA is not going to lose by ten goals or whatever they need to lose by to finish 4th and even if they did, they should beat Solomon Islands.
South America is kind of done, the half spot duel between Chile, Colombia and Peru should see Peru win and face the Asian 0.5 team, which will probably be Australia and one assumes the S American team-whoever it is- will win. I suppose there is some excitement for the countries involved to see who will play Australia, but it is like S America in that the 3 teams involved dont play each other ( I dunno, does that make it more Rocking?) Iraq plays the bottom team so maybe have the best chance of advancing, actually they have a good chance to beat Australia as well, so kinda Rocking, like maybe a Dire Straits or Cold Play concert, not really rocking though like a Deep Purple or Zeppelin concert.
UEFA and AFCON still have lots to play for and for the final day will be the most rockingest confederations. Portugal will of course beat N Macedonia, just like Italy and Germany would of course beat N Macedonia. Poland vs Sweden is about as Rocking as a Barry Manilow concert, ok maybe a Micheal Bolton concert. Poland have a bit of Rockingness left in them but Sweden is as boring as BYURK book case. I would have said an ABBA concert, but they rock more than this Sweden team.
AFCON has everything to play for because you never win a game in AFCON by more than one goal, that is the AFCON thing and that makes AFCON the Rockingest confederation. Away goals rule applies in AFCON, which eliminates any chance of any tie going to ET, except that I can see at least one or two going to ET. There is no Pharaoh curse in Senegal, I can see that tie going to ET, I could also see Ghana v Nigeria going to ET, though they would have to 0-0 it due to the away goals rule.
Not very Rocking here anymore, we went from sitting outside in the sun last week drinking wine and IPA's to looking outside our window at snow and -10C temps, drinking tea and deciding which mits and touques we are going to wear, about as rocking as a Justin Bieber concert- which we had in town here yesterday. Back in the city too, that kind of does not Rock either, though my wife thinks I lack any Rockingness cus I only want to stay hidden up at the cottage instead of being in town shopping and going to bars and restaurants, that just does not rock me anymore. Mont Ste Marie is only open on weekends now ( and only if they have enough snow) so this is a very un rocking time of year, all you can do is pick up old dog shit that has re appeared since the snow melted, cant even go for a bike ride it is so cold and snowy.

Mont Ste Marie is only open on weekends now ( and only if they have enough snow) so this is a very un rocking time of year, all you can do is pick up old dog shit that has re appeared since the snow melted, cant even go for a bike ride it is so cold and snowy.

Ghana qualifies on the away goal rule.
Senegal-Egypt has gone to extra time, 10 minutes left before penalty kicks? (Has there ever been a case where a spot to the world cup has been determined by a PK shootout?)
Portugal does what Italy was unable to do, their expensive offensive talent (Ronaldo and Bruno) combine to put them 1-0 up

Lots of laser-pointing activity directed at the Egyptian goalie from the stands. If it goes to a PK shootout, this will be interesting.

Senegal takes it 3-1 on PKs.

Thanks heavens. The utterly woeful brand of negative Portuguese football that Queiroz had the Egyptians playing would have stunk up the WC.

For a country that produces such wonderfully technical players, their coaches are quite the opposite (Mourinho, Santos, Queiroz, Nuno).

At least one. Australia vs Uruguay for a spot in the 2006 WC. Both legs finished 1-0 to the home side.

The final game of Asian qualifying to see who will meet Peru for the final spot- well except for the New Zealand v Costa Rica game or games- has just kicked off. UAE v Aussie a one off match played in Qatar, which seems a bit unfair for Aussie, then again, I just assume Peru will beat either.
