• The Quest to find ET

    From Binder Dundat@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Thu Mar 17 09:52:03 2022
Ever since the rejection of the away goals rule by UEFA, not one single game has gone to extra time, for those of us who live to watch ET and PKs, here are the odds of it happening today in Europaliga
Rangers Scotland Serbia Red Star Belgrade 3rCo0
The home teams from the first leg listed first, so this game today would be in Belgrade. This aint CONCACAF, so no chance of spotting ET here.
    Braga Portugal France Monaco 2rCo0
I would say less than 50% chance of spotting ET in Monaco today
    Porto Portugal France Lyon 0rCo1
This could be a good game to see ET and maybe even PKs
Atalanta Italy Germany Bayer Leverkusen 3rCo2
THe Pretenders are more likely to collapse at home than on the road, so I wont say no chance of ET, but Pretenders always gonna pretend.
Sevilla Spain England West Ham United 1rCo0
I would say a good chance to see ET in London today.
    Barcelona Spain Turkey Galatasaray 0rCo0
Probably the most interesting game, Turkish fans are quite good and should give Gala a boost, I think they win it without the ET, so probably low chance of ET, even though from an odds perspective, probably the most likely. Barca are favourites to win the EUropa this year.
RB Leipzig Germany Russia Spartak Moscow Canc.
So Red Bull goes though without having to do anything?
Real Betis Spain Germany Eintracht Frankfurt 1rCo2
I could see ET happening here, even if Frankfurt are at home for the 2nd leg. --- SBBSecho 3.06-Win32

As it stands, the best chance of catching ET is in Turkei, no chance of ET in Belgrade or Monaco, slight chance with the Pretenders.

Barca ended the half strongly, I would say the momentum had switched during the half from Gala to Barca as the half ended. Good match.

8 matches today, and the team playing away today looks like winning the
tie in each case. In theory that is the lower seed, right ?

Even in the CL, the lower seed won in 4 cases. (Villareal, Benfica,
    Atletico, and Chelsea)

Now, the sample size is small, and correlation is not causation and all
that, but could this have something to do with the Away Goals Rule
    changing ?

On the contrary, abolition of AGR is likely to favor the big dogs, for at least three reasons:
    1) With AGR, you could get an underdog scoring an equal amount of goals as the favorite, and having AGR send them through (Example: Barcelona-Roma 4-1 and 0-3 in 2018-2019).
    2) Without AGR, higher likelihood of tie going to ET, so more time for the favorite to make its qualitative advantage count.
    3) Without AGR, more ties going to ET, big dogs with deep benches more likely to prevail.

You cant just include any cup in this Quest. I mean come on, why dont I include the MLS CUp or the Edmonton Peewee Girls Cup? This applies only to real football.

Such disrespect for the Europa Conference League. Anyway, Gent-PAOK ad Roma-Vitesse could still go to ET, while the other two ties look to be done and dusted.

    No luck there.

So, out of 40 knockout ties in the three main European competitions, 5 have gone to ET. That's 12.5 %. Keep in mind that 15% number. It will get there.

There was just one more dangerous header in stoppage time. But a final 0.400 points in the ranking, I'll take it.
Also, could prove costly for the Czechs in the fight for 15th spot, as Norway are still in it and getting

    No luck there.

So, out of 40 knockout ties in the three main European competitions, 5 have gone to ET. That's 12.5 %. Keep in mind that 15% number. It will get there.

Only two ties went to penalties last round, though (Sherif - Braga, Midtjylland - PAOK, one with scores that would have meant pens with AGR
). I like ET. I hate penalties. So far I like this (though I am sure
    it won't last).

Well, logic dictates that the ratio ET/penalties can only increase without AGR, as there are now results which
would lead to a shootout that previously didn't.
