• UCL 2022/23 R16 2nd Legs [R]

    From Al Kamista@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Tue Mar 8 11:29:34 2022
    Why not?

    LFC (2-0) Inter

A 2-0 lead on a European night at Anfield. What could go wrong? Everything, starting with complacency.

    Bayern (1-1) Salzburg

A Salzburg upset would be beyond epic.

Nothing can go wrong, though Inter are a decent team.

    Bayern (1-1) Salzburg

A Salzburg upset would be beyond epic.
But not out of the question. Bayern have not looked good lately, Salzburg have some busy and quick attackers, I am predicting at least a draw. It is practically a derby match as well, I dunno, maybe Werner or Jesper or Bruce are there? Could be the last game of the UCL this season?

I want to say a terrible dive by Lewandowski, but I just cant say anything bad about the Polish ( it was a clear penal). Lewa converts 1-0. Lots of time left...

I cant blame Lewandowski for this penal. I think it should be considered outside the box, though initial contact may have been inside. I was OK with the run up to the kick on the first one, but I didnt like the stop -start on this one. Though not as bad as some he has taken. It dont matter none, he scored again and it is 3-0 after, like 20 minutes.
Time to see if Inter can pull it off.

I'm trying to be as objective as possible here -

Sanchez did win the ball first, but if you're going to fly into a challenge then the onus is on you to ensure that no one feels their studs on their leg after the fact. A red it definitely was not, but as a yellow I think it was the right call.

Maybe our resident referee HASM can weigh in?

That's what I was taught multiple times in refresher meetings. Flying
in, studs showing, can't control leg once in the air, all conditions are
met for it to be either a caution or ejection.

If you look at it as an isolated incident, without the context of when
it happened, it is hard to argue that this is not at least a caution.

I would think most people questioning the caution are doing so because
it is the second caution, resulting in an ejection.

If you don't card this, you're going to have the same amount of people
on the other side complaining just as hard, and, much worse, what are
you going to do when someone on the other team does the same thing 5
minutes later? Recipe for losing control of the match.

Spot on. I think most critics of the decision are subconsciously looking at it as a red card decision, which it wasn't.

Glenn Hoddle was the pundit on BT Sports and I liked his description of PSG's defensive howlers as "school boy errors but by school boys who've never played football before".
Never really been a Real Madrid fan but then PSG and their embarrassment of riches are very hard to root for too. These teams are basically two sides of the same coin, but as it was hilarious watching PSG snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, for tonight I'll say - Hala Madrid!

Yes, it could have been a foul.

I've only watched the first half, then had other things to do and missed all the excitement.

In that first half there were a lot of "that looked like a foul to me" moments, for both sides, and when I saw the 1-1 replay later on I thought it was in that some category.

Consistently lenient, as someone on reddit put it, thus not calling it was just status quo, but this resulted in a goal and with VAR it should probably have been called back.

Actually in Paris this week, could have tried to find Ixion. Games at 9 pm are not as easy to watch as during lunch time in California.

It was pretty obvious that the match would have been decided on an isolated episode. Two sides terrified to put the foot on the accelerator until Rugani's foul. That's the direct consequence of the abolition of the Away Goal Rule. You get what you paid for.

Interesting that none of the 8 fixtures went to extra time, though.
Let's see what the total is after today's matches.

But I don't see the logic of blaming this on the away goal rule.
Presumably the match would have been equally cautious , with Juve in particular taking no risks and hoping to score on the counter, and
Villareal only cranking up the intensity in the last quarter hour.

You get what you paid for.

Interestingly, the two CL QF legs sandwich the City-LFC title-edging showdown in April. If one team gets a much easier draw than the other, it could have a profound effect on the EPL title race.

And of course if they draw each other then it could be the mother of all battles between the two clubs - they'll play each other thrice in a week - each game being as big as the other two.

It was pretty obvious that the match would have been decided on an isolated episode. Two sides terrified to put the foot on the accelerator until Rugani's foul.
That's the direct consequence of the abolition of the Away Goal Rule.

Interesting that none of the 8 fixtures went to extra time, though.
Let's see what the total is after today's matches.

Well there have already been a ton of matches played according to the new rules in the qualifiers,
and the percentage of ties that went to extra time has roughly doubled.

But I don't see the logic of blaming this on the away goal rule.
Presumably the match would have been equally cautious , with Juve in particular taking no risks and hoping to score on the counter, and
Villareal only cranking up the intensity in the last quarter hour.
You get what you paid for.

Is there any soul-searching among Juventinos about their SuperLeague credentials
when they now have been eliminated by, in turn, Ajax, Lyon, Porto, and Villarreal?

So the abolishment of an archaic and arbitrary rule, that would have given Juventus a random "lead" in the tie even though both teams had scored exactly the same number of goals, is to be rued because the game was unadventurous?

This really had nothing to do with Juve being on the short end of the rule change. I have been consistently in favor AGR, even when Juve went out to Lyon and Porto in the past two CL seasons because of AGR.

Yep. In the long run, expect about 15% of ties to go to ET.

Soul-searching about our credentials? Not really. How many other teams have made it to the CL last 16 in each of the past 8 years?

Soul-searching about the decision to bring back Allegri on a 5-year contract with massive wages? Plenty.
(for others: soul-searching about the decision to let Allegri go away 3 years ago...)

I didn't say it did. You were complaining the game was unadventurous. But as MH said, it's debatable if it would be any different had the AGR been in effect. Alegri isn't exactly known for his free flowing attacking football. Was he defending a first leg "lead," Juventus would probably have been even cagier. And Villareal would have probably bode their time well into the second half before exposing themselves in search of a goal. It's a stretch to argue that the AGR would have made this game more exciting. There is no way to tell.

I got me a suspicion. Bayern rCLplaysrCY with the results; e.g., at Salzburg, at Villareal. Methinks Bayern wants to establish better betting odds. Maybe the players donrCOt bet openly, but their trusted friends DO!
BayernrCOs odds dropped now to 5/1, way behind ManCity and Liver. Pound for pound, however, Bayern is above the two English sides. Bayern also loves to play against English teams. Recent proofs: 7 rCo 2 against Tottenham on the road, 6 rCo 0 against Chelsea (2 legs).

Anthological night in UCL! Villareal succeeded in what appeared to be the impossible against the blitzkrieg! Real Madrid rCo Chelsea was a dramatic game, with another seemingly impossible turnaround.

Chelsea had a 3rCo 0 lead after that seemingly impossible to overcome 1 rCo 3 at home. Chelsea even had a 4 rCo 0 opportunity, but rCLKokostirquerCY Courtois saved the day for the Galactics. Only after that, Real Madrid started to play... football.

Too bad, matches like the two are sooo rare in football!
