    From Futbolmetrix@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Sun Jan 30 12:30:13 2022

17 minutes in, 1-0 Canada, Larin with the goal in the 6th minute.

Why are Canada playing in their black jerseys? National teams should use as much as possible their first jersey, and especially so in rivalry matches.

On this matter, I am not generally a fan of the USMNT, but their jerseys almost always beautiful: simple and classic, just right.

That's a major gripe I have with all football, be it domestic, European
or Internationals ... all teams should play in their traditional
first/home kits where possible and only change for a clash of colours.
All too often you see a change strip where none is actually required.

Yes, but it's even worse when it's in local rivalries.

In the meanwhile, USA close to an equalizer thanks to a McKennie header, but Borjan does well to push the ball onto the crossbar with a nice reflex save.

Ahh, but it is required because the money men at the club need to generate interest in that lime and pink third kit they're selling for -u70.

A good goal, but we have been largely overrun since then. One great
save by Borjan on a header at the end of first half

USA still better than us in the second half but we had another great
chance that really should have put the game away.

Weston McKennie has been good. And more disciplined than usual. But
his throw ins are all illegal, according to what I was taught. When is
the ref going to call that.

    Agree 100 %

Mexico playing in black just seems so wrong as well.

Not so keen on their "Where's Waldo" version of yesteryear.

2-1 possession against, but they actually outshot on goal 4 to 3, according to the stats I'm seeing.

Very late goal by Adekugbe to make it 2-0. He should have had one
earlier when played in by Hoilett.

So US the better team, more possession, even more intensity at times,
but they lacked a cutting edge, and Borjan was there when he had to be.
Shots on target we were actually ahead.

22 points. I would hazard a guess that will be enough. Certainly 2 draws
from the remaining 4 games (only one at home though) should see us
through. Fortune has smiled on us more than once in this qualifying tournament, that's for sure. Winning 5 of 6 home games (one draw at
home to Honduras, but we made up for that by beating them away) sure has helped.

Next up El Salvador. Vitoria is suspended. Buchanan too, I think.
Piette injured. Eustaquio still not ready to go. And of course no
Davies. Herdman does like to rotate (except for Alistair Johnson, who
might have played every minute), so I would not be surprised to see
Cornelius and Kennedy start in central defence, and Fraser starting
alongside the rested Atiba in midfield. Liam Miller might get a run out
    as well.

They did and even added another goal, so I guess they are doing something right, they seem to have a very professional attitude to them. I dunno, I just want to see them playing a more attacking game, that seems to be their strength, but maybe this style is better, the keeper and defenders looked good today and the results speak for themselves. Not mathematically there yet, wont be even if they win the game on Wednesday, but only a matter of time before they qualify for the Winter World Cup.

Panama came from behind to beat Jamaica. El Salvador surprisingly won
in Honduras. Mexico (at home) could not beat Costa Rica. So Panama
still very much in contention, and Costa Rica and El Salvador still in
with a chance. Honduras are mathematically eliminated even from 4th
place. Jamaica would need to win all their remaining games (gets them to
19 points) and hope the US or Mexico lose all theirs, and Panama gets no
more than two draws. Since Panama still has to play both Mexico and the
US away, that would be impossible, right. 4th Place for Jamaica would
still be a very tall order.

Adekugbe gets my vote for Man of Match (even before the goal). He has improved immensely since moving to Turkey. I am less concerned about
our central defenders than I used to be, as Vitoria and Miller have been pretty useful (though really good forwards would cut them to pieces),
and Kennedy shows promise. As long as we don't have to play Cornelius
and Henry (especially together), we are OK against Concacaf opposition.

I thought Mark Anthony Kaye was the worst player on the pitch. Pretty
tough for MLS players to come in without much preparation or a camp, so
not entirely his fault, but Miller and Osorio and Johnson are in the
same boat, and did quite well. Larin didn't do much apart from the
goal. Loses the ball far too easily against competent defenders. And Buchanan had what may have been his worst outing in a Canada shirt.

I too would like to see us play a more attacking game.
