A new winner for the first time in 30 years is already certain.

    Quarterfinals (draw on January 30):

    4x Bundesliga

    - 1. FC Union Berlin (runners-up 2001)
    - SC Freiburg (-)
    - RB Leipzig (runners-up 2019, 2021)
    - VfL Bochum (runners-up 1968, 1988)

    4x 2. Bundesliga

    - FC St. Pauli (-)
    - Hamburger SV (winners 1963, 1976, 1987, runners-up 1956, 1967, 1974)
    - Karlsruher SC (winners 1955, 1956, runners-up 1960, 1996)
    - Hannover 96 (winners 1992)

I saw the penalty and refereeing decision that resulted in HSV winning
vs. K||ln. In the replays it was not clear to me that the ball had
touched the second (left) foot as the guy slipped. I assume the ref did
    get it right ?
What a way to lose, though.

Saw the Berlin derby last night... also SP - Dortmund.
The smaller teams in each case were very brave in the way you
want them to be in the Cup. Would be cool if one of these
    two won it.

Dortmund had barely a look after they got their pen for the 1-2,
paid for their largesse in the 1st half.

Union were the better team in most of their match excepting
part of the 1st half. Both wins deserved.

Bayern conquerors Gladbach crashed out almost as bad as we did!
Hannover left the 4-0 to lay rather generously.

Everything is so calm now in the world, the hot tub truckers are gone or in jail, covid is over, we are almost at the point of going mask-less, not yet, but you dont need covid passports to buy booze or meals (that was only a Quebec thing), drove into town and no road blocks or protesters to contend with anymore, but yeah, I can go and sit in a bar until 2 AM now, just like the old days. Nothing bad can ever happen again, the world is calm and all we have to worry about is maybe the odd war happening here or there.
The DFB Pokal matches are on YOUTube, which is nice, free and legal, that is my new catch phrase.
I was watching Freiburg v Bochum and in the 120 min at 1-, left the room to make sure no Russians had filed into the back yard and by the time I came back to watch the Penals, it was 2-1 for Freiburg. HSV, Red Bull Leipzig, Union Berlin along with Freiburg are the 4 teams left. I like Freiburg's chances of winning this, would be good for Streich to get some recognition.

Surely a team that is 5th in the 2. Bundesliga can't win the Cup? (even though, maybe they reach the Cup final and lose in agonizing fashion...I can live with that...)

I did something today I have not done since Covid, I got my teeth cleaned, excruciating hour of getting teeth scraped and picked at and jabbed. The weather is not helping either, we seem to be having one of those never ending or at least reoccurring winters. Yesterday was a nice, sunny, sit outside t shirt day, today is a snow/rain/ice day again, sort of Hamburg winter weather.
I am going to say that HSV needs this, cus I dont think they will get promoted this year. Mathematically they are still in contention, four games left 6 points away from auto promotion, 5 points from a play off with Felix Magath.
Schalke in first though have 3 tough games left and might collapse, St Pauli have a habit of dropping points and Werder are too unpredictable, so I wont even try and guess promotion.
HSV v Freiburg today, will give us an indication of the difference between the 1st and 2nd divs. I think Freiburg will pull it off, but the game is in Hamburgo, so maybe not ???
I think this match is on YouTube for Kanadians sitting inside at home on this wintery April day.

At the moment HSV fans are probably cursing VARobots. First goal was checked for an offisde that would have been called years ago, but the Robots judged the Freiburg player was not interfering, probably correct, but would not have been bothered if it had been called. Third Freiburg goal a result of the Robots giving a PK for a kick to the head of a player down on the ground and then an HSV goal called back for offside, again correct but that goal would have made it 1-3 and Hamburg might have felt they are back in the game.

I thought this game, between a first and second division team would be closer than Liverpool beating Man United. Apparently I was right.
    HSV 1 - 3 SCF FT
    Liv 4 - 0 MAN 88min
Man U with apparently 28% posession

What is typical Red Bull style and how can there even be a typical style for a team that has been around for only 10 years? The only thing typical for them will be selling Nkunu and probably a few others this year. Ten Haag will probably sign a few of them, I would sign the Hungarian kid if I was him.
Did not watch the match, but stats suggest Red Bull had more ball control and passing, while goal chances and most other stats seemed even.
At the moment Leipzig is the hottest team in Germany, maybe not the hottest but the lukewarmest at least.

Lukewarmest. I love it. Reminds me of the scene in Ast|-rix Mission Cl|-opatra where they are preparing a bath (of ass's milk ?) and the
    young lady says "ooh, c'est ti|?de, tr|?s ti|?de)

The women's quarter-final results were interesting:

Carl Zeiss Jena 1 Bayern Munchen 9
SGS Essen 1 Bayer Leverkusen 2 (aet)
VfL Wolfsburg 7 SC Sand 0
    SV Henstedt-Ulzburg 0 Turbine Potsdam 7

    The semi-final results:

Bayern Munchen 1 VfL Wolfsburg 3
Bayer Leverkusen 1 Turbine Potsdam 1
    Turbine Potsdam won on penalties

So Turbine Potsdam are in the Cup Final!

Wolfsburg have won it about 7 years in a row at the moment.

How did that happen?! Are Barcelona better than I realised?
And was it a world record attendance? Apparently there was a women's match in about 1971 that had a crowd of 110,000.

The last few years Spain has the most money and Barcelona became the
best team in Europe a couple of years ago. Heavy favourites for the
    CL, once again.

Women's final today between Barca and Lyon, but to keep on subject, the DFB Pokal final is on today as well, between hard working Freiburg and Germany's favourite team, Red Bull Leipzig. Love em or hate em, we will have a new king regardless of who wins. I have to assume the betting odds are heavily in favour of Red Bull. Also interesting that DAZN is showing this here on the Iceberg ( which is really hot and humid today) they have yet to show any DFB Pokal games, not sure how they got the rights to the final, but I would be happy if they took over the Bundesliga rights from Sportsnet, who did a terrible job and should just stick to Curling and Blooper reels. DAZN also showing the Womens UCL final, I think they covered most if not all the Women's games this season?
In Bundesliga related news, it looks like Felix can not save Hertha, who somehow managed to lose the first leg in Berlin. So yeah, not official yet, but Schalke (25th anniversary of their UEFA cup win today), Werder Bremen and HSV will be returning to the 1st div

It looked good for Freiburg, Eggestein had made it 1-0 afte 19
minutes, and early in the second half, Halstenberg was sent off for a
last man foul on Holer. Text book call, but bad decision from
Halstenberg; it's not like it was Haaland that was about to get a
shot, and Halstenberg was still in good position to block any shots
for the far post. But to his credit, he didn't complain.

It's difficult to chase when you're 10v11, but Leipzig got on with it,
and you couldn't really tell. The 1-1 was a bit random, but well
    deserved.

Leipzig also had penalty claim, that reminded of other non calls that
people had been going on for weeks about.

In the shoot out, two Freiburg players skied their kicks, while all 4
    Leipzig kicks were top quality.

The trophy ceremoni was long delayed due to a medical emergency, but
even with this delay, 90% of the Freiburg fans were still there when
Leipzig lifted the cup. Contrast that with the FA Cup and Europa
League finals where half the stadion was empty.
