The old Hapoel Jerusalem had a period of relative glory in the 60s and 70s, winning one State Cup in the early 1970s, but since the rise of the Likud in Israeli society, they have played second-fiddle to Beitar.
In the early 2000s I once took Futbolmetrix Jr. to watch a few Hapoel matches (this was the old corrupt Hapoel, at the time they were fighting for promotion to the top league). When I told about this to a Beitarist friend of mine, his reaction was that he would immediately call social services to report me for child abuse.
Having started looking at the League tables, I've now realized I'm playing away, I might as well make my picks now though and just pretend I was playing mind games or something.

Indeed. While the rest of the footballing world concentrates its matches
in a short window during the Christmas period (omicron permitting), UPT
does things differently.

And there was quite some drama, and an interesting legal twist. The Jerusalem derby was the Match of the Day in Ligat Ha'Al, moved to Sunday evening prime-time TV. Great atmosphere (in the end I couldn't go), a level of football that you could expect from these two teams. Former Juve prospect Richmond Boakye put Beitar ahead at the stroke of half-time. Hapoel tried to fight back, without creating much in terms of goal threat, and it was Beitar that came closer to making it 2-0. Then, the critical event in the match: in the 81st minute, Hapoel coach Ziv Arieh sends in young Ghanaian Cletus Nombil in for Guy Hadida. Interesting attacking move...the only problem with it is that Nombil is the sixth foreign player on the pitch, in violation of the Israeli FA rule that only 5 foreigners are allowed on the pitch at any moment. The TV commentators immediately realize the mistake, and soon after the Hapoel bench, but not the players on the pitch and most of the crowd. In the 91st minute, Ondrej Baco scores the dramatic equalizer for Hapoel, and rightfully celebrates together with the ecstatic red crowd in the stands. But soon after everybody becomes aware of the mess-up, and it's the Beitar players celebrating for what will become a technical 3-0 win.
