• Boring defensive Serie A

    From Futbolmetrix@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Sun Dec 5 08:46:32 2021
Current season: 483 goals in 312 matches so far, for a goal per game average of 3.1.

For comparison, the EPL is at 2.77 goals per game, La Liga at 2.43. The usually stingy Ligue 1 is at 2.88, while the Bundesliga is still on top with 3.14.

But the high goal per game rate doesn't seem to be just the fruit of the big fish blowing out the minnows. For example, this week we have had:

    Venezia - Verona 3-4 (HT: 3-0)
    Spezia - Sassuolo 2-2 (HT: 2-0)

Fortunately Allegri's Juve is yet to play, and that will surely bring the average down a notch...

Just a statistical blip, or is the art of defending dying out in Italy?

The average has been above the 3-goal-threshold in the last two seasons as well, so I don't think it's a blip.
Does VAR play a role? But in its first two seasons of use there was no such effect yet.

Reddit has picked up on this, noting that for the second year in a row eight teams
in the Primera Divisi||n are below the threshold of one goal per game scored, and
five more are close. That's more than half the league, and way more than in the other
    Top 4.
One theory put forward is that the relative success of ultra-defensive teams like Getafe*
has inspired most other small clubs to follow a similar pattern of low block and quick
counters, a recipe that works like a charm in a league usually characterised by possession-
based football. Others have taken a long hard look at Simeone's Atl|-tico.
But it's also being blamed on the reffing, alleging that it's too lenient regarding time wasting
    and other shithousery.
*(this season, Getafe appear to have become the victims of their own success) Ciao,
    Werner

Even in the heyday of the Messi-Ronaldo era, the goal per game in La Liga was not particularly high outside of Barca and Real. Take away the Big Two's 120+ goals per season, and the rest of the league was quite stingy.
(I think the above statement is correct, I once looked at the data but never compiled it properly...

As far as I know, the EPL's goal per game average has always been lower than Serie A's, despite the fact that English defenses are crap. Are English forwards really bad too?
