• Referee's decision in Man United v. Watford

    From KaiserD2@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Sat Nov 20 21:28:53 2021
My own refereeing career came to an end about 30 years ago, but I
remember what I learned, and I was astonished by something that
happened in this game, which of course will forever be known as Ole's
    last one.

Watford took a penalty early in the game, De Gea saved it, and a
second Watford player, breaking into the area, put the ball in the
net. They quickly established that he had encroached and waved the
goal off. But then the ref let them take the penalty again! Why???
The penalty had been fairly saved and the second player had no right
to touch it. It would have been proper to order the retake if the
shot had gone in--the actual penalty shot--because of the offensive
team's encroachment. Or, if the ref moved that De Gea had moved too
soon. But in this case, I don't get it.

Wan-Bissaka had encroached as well. IrCOve checked
on the IFAB page, and that such a double
infringement should lead to the penalty being
retaken has been explicitly stated in the Laws of the
Game ever since their 1999 edition.

But IrCOll grant that itrCOs rarely been enforced, at least before VAR.

    Ciao,

a double infringement should lead to the penalty being retaken ... but
IrCOll grant that itrCOs rarely been enforced, at least before VAR.
If encroachment is defined by someone from either team stepping into
the penalty area or the arc on top of it, I would guess that almost all
of the penalty kicks would have to be retaken. If this is ever fully automated, we will have some comedy action for a long time until players
get used to it. Human referee crews would not survive if they attempted
to fully enforce this rule in everyday games.
Another encroachment that seems to no longer be punished, is that I've
stopped seeing players "respecting the required distance when play is
restarted with a dropped ball, corner kick, free kick or throw-in", and
be cautioned for it, specially when they step in front of the ball way
before the referee calls for a "ceremonial" kick. Since I've stopped refereeing 13 years ago this seems to have been forgotten by all referee
crews. More work for our robotic crews of the future.
