• NIR-ITA, SUI-BUL UEFA WCQ shootout [R]

    From Futbolmetrix@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Mon Nov 15 12:10:02 2021
About 20 minutes in, still 0-0 in both matches. So far, Italy has been able to create one chance, but Di Lorenzo tried a difficult shot from a difficult angle rather than dragging it back to Berardi.

It feels like this is not going to go to GD after all, but on whether Italy will be able to get a single goal past the solid Norther Irish defense

    HT: 0-0

A half chance for Insigne, who was too timid to hit the ball with his left foot. Together with the Di Lorenzo chance at the start, that's about it for Italy. Insigne deployed as false 9 is not working at all.

0-0 in SUI-BUL at HT. This is not going to end well.

Elsewhere, England is hammering San Marino. Kane's four goals now put him in third place overall in the list of all time England goalscorers.

More important for playoff seeding ramifications are the results of Scotland-Denmark (SCO up 1-0) and Poland-Hungary (0-1). This would put Scotland into the seeded pot, and likely also Italy.

Assuming Italy gets at least a draw...Massive chance for Northern Ireland, but fortunately the Irish dude's shot from 8 yards out is straight at Donnarumma

Apparently Swiss have scored, I am watchin the other game.

Based onthe first half it looks only a matter of time before Italy score. Having said that, The POM Irish did start the 2nd half well.

Elsewhere, England is hammering San Marino. Kane's four goals now put him in third place overall in the list of all time England goalscorers.

More important for playoff seeding ramifications are the results of Scotland-Denmark (SCO up 1-0)

Scotland doing Denmark a huge favour by removing the kiss of death (a
perfect qualifying campaign) from them. Danes complicit in this as that
does not look like a first choice attack at all - though there may be
    injuries I know nothing about.
According to ESPNFC, Scotland have committed only 5 fouls, and have no
yellow cards. Something must be seriously wrong.

Maybe Italy *are* ordinary? The magic of the Summer of 2021 has worn off, and this is what we are.
Barely 5 or 6 starters for CL-caliber teams, very little offensive talent to speak of. It would always have been difficult to crack a tough nut like NIR, Mancini's poor choices didn't help.

If I'm reading the ranking of second-placed teams correctly, we barely squeeze into the pool of seeded teams in the playoff.

If I'm reading the ranking of second-placed teams correctly, we barely squeeze into the pool of seeded teams in the playoff.

Seeded: POR, SCO, RUS, ITA, SWE
    Uncertain: POL or WAL
Unseeded: North Macedonia, Turkey, Finland, Austria and Czech Republic

If the Czechs win by a few goals (quite possible at home to Estonia),
and Wales lose, the Czechs could be seeded ahead of Poland. Turkey can
also bypass Poland with an away win in Montenegro. They could also win
the group if Norway beat the NL (who can yet crash out completely,
though that seems highly unlikely). So still plenty of uncertainty.
