• What, no Man Utd - Liverpool thread?

    From Jesper Lauridsen@24:150/2 to rec.sport.soccer on Sun Oct 24 19:50:16 2021
Or is business as usual just not news worthy?

May Ole remain at the wheel for many years to come.

Liverpool have been consistently thrashing weak teams this season, hence the latter.

May Ole remain at the wheel for many years to come.
    He's dangling by a thread.
Despite his immense limitations as a coach, I think the poisoned chalice called Ronaldo was forced upon him. Ronaldo in his latter years has basically become a top goalscorer who actually weakens his teams. Same happened at Juventus. Another cling-to-the-past boneheaded move by United's management. Long may it continue.

Seems likely. Poor guy has had to put up with so much flack ever since
they gave him the job permanently - which was pretty much a premature decision. I thought he was going to be gone after losing to Atalanta,
but the team dug in and saved his bacon - to the benefit of Liverpool, perhaps.
But has he really done worse than Moyes, Van Gaal, or Mourinho, all of
whom came to the job more experienced and more built up than he did ?

Whatever his merits as a coach, I think a lot of the problems are in the playing personnel, and in the upper management. They have spent a lot of
    money without much payoff.

I tend to agree. Pogba is another problem - capable of feats of
brilliance for sure, but not always motivated, and a bit of a bonehead.
Seems to care more about his hairdo and colour than the team (that
might be harsh). I have compared him to Balotelli in the past, though
he is certainly saner and less of a nutcase - but there is the same inconsistency and impression of arrogance and sulkiness.

As for Ronaldo, it also seems that he and Bruno Fernandes have trouble
playing in the same team. This was apparent for Portugal in the summer
and also this season. Plus Ronaldo in the team means less time on the
pitch for Rashford, Greenwood, and Martial, all still capable of
improvement, and Cavani, who is still a very effective player.

Same happened at Juventus. Another cling-to-the-past boneheaded move
by United's management. Long may it continue.

All of those got fired. And pretty quickly, too. Ole has been at the
wheel longer than Moyes and Van Gaal put together.

Some would say that is (also) on the coach. Ole has had two full
seasons, and 3 preseasons, to put his mark on the team. Many expensive
players, with big names, have been brought in. What is there to show
    for it?

Leaving aside the results, has Ole created an identity for the team?
Has he improved individual players? Is there any kind of progress?

That's the puzzling thing, the Man Utd board are showing Ole a loyalty
that some better managers before him didn't get...for me, a loyalty Ole doesn't deserve based on recent results.

Ole was the perfect manager for them. A non-confrontational yes-man, loved by the fans, and able to get them into the top 4 regularly to keep the money machine humming smoothly. Trophies would have been a bonus, but not a necessity. That is of course until now, where a top 4 finish is under serious threat.
