• Another First For The NSV!

    From alvey@24:150/2 to rec.sport.cricket on Wed Nov 17 09:19:56 2021
Yes it's true. For the first time two States will play each other in the Sheffield Shield H & A component of the season. NSW & Vic today begin their third consecutive Shield game against t'other. Why is this 120 odd years
old tradition being broken you ask? Well to give players from these States 'more chance of Test selection'.

Briefly, here's some other 'Firsts' for the NSW part of the NSV.

    1. First player to go on a tour exclusively as a "development player".
    Mitchell Starc (WI)

    2. First Test 12th man to be allowed to trot off and play Shield. Brett
    Lee.

    3. First State to be awarded the Shield before the completion of the season (non-war). NSW.

Nope. No way is there any bias in Australian cricket.

are they making up the fixtures ad hoc cos of covid, or is there an
official list somewhere, cos its making it very hard to follow.

AIUI each state usually plays 10 games, which mean they play each
other 2x home and away, which seems simple enough. if these 2
play each 3x, presumably some of the other states will have to
do the same. if so it could become very disjointed and confusing
    competition.

    "become"?

Apparently Oz is hosting the next T20 WC in 2022, 'when' exactly I don't
know, or care, but I fear for the Shield. "This season we'll abbreviate the Shield to 5 games per side. Just for this season. Honest."

i just read that none of the test players will be playing, so it wont
help anyone with prep for ashes if thats true. And then I read that
there might have been a positive covid. Rumours rumours..

No, but it will help non-Test players.

I don't believe that they are. Iirc, it's some sort of Covid Shuffle
    result.

They certainly aren't annular events, which are usually known as
    eclipses.

But assuming it was supposed to be "annual", they're not. They're
biennial. And we've just finished the 2020 WC, so the next one will be
    in 2022.

    Cheers,
