• 63 point lead with 10 races to go. Current betting odds.

    From a425couple@24:150/2 to rec.autos.sport.f1 on Wed Jul 27 10:10:48 2022
Max Verstappen now has a 63 point lead in the
World Drivers Championship with 10 races to go.
(12 have been completed.) That is a quite
    substantial and meaningful lead.

Although Max seems to have matured greatly in the
last four years, and has already greatly reduced
the frequency of colliding with competitors,
I do not think it likely that he will noticeably
change his driving style and goals from what
he has shown so far this year. He wants victories.

I think we will continue to see spirited and
    tight competition for F1 victories.

Just for comparison, in 2016 Nico Rossberg had
a 33 point lead after he pushed hard and won
in Japan and looked forward to the next four races.
He went into a 'prevent loss' driving style and
was content to follow Lewis Hamilton and take
2nd place in all the following races to win his
WDC. LH won the next 4, with NR taking second
and thus closing out his win of the WDC.

And we see the above reflected in the betting odds.
(Close for Hungary win, but WDC pretty much decided.)

Yes, I have little doubt that Mercedes will be back
competing for wins. They continue to spend the money
and effort. I was surprised, and saddened, that they
dominated for so long. I think it hurts the sport
to have any team so consistently winning for too long.
