All that paint is just unsightly and distracting.

I'm sure someone here knows more of the details, but since Paul Ricard
is used by multiple series, including, I believe, motorcycles, some of
the design is due to the requirements of those series.

The paint is high-friction designed to slow vehicles down to a greater
extent than ordinary asphalt and with less debris on the track, as is
    often the case with gravel.

I can't speak to the drivers' perspective, but the view from higher
certainly seems confusing with all the optional circuit layouts. I
wonder if this track is harder to learn because of all the possible
directions a driver might head off in.

I've been saying that since the start. Is it trying to be an optical
illusion, or is someone going to steal our wallet whilst we stare into
    the patterns?

True. And that chicane wrecks what should be an awesome strait.

But one that would make DRS too much a free overtake.
    If A overtakes B, then B overtakes A, then A overtakes B, and B
overtakes A, etc. on subsequent laps, that's not good racing.

    Pretty narrow thinking there.

Optimism is fine, at least until they start

I would think that because those curves are also so flat, it must be
tricky remembering where the track goes !

I haven't run Paul Ricard in anything except a game, but learning a
track isn't really that hard once you've gotten used to it.

Paul Ricard probably makes the first 10-15 laps a little tougher, but
once you know, the visual cues are there.
