F1 rCyheading into dangerous territoryrCO towards WWE
    Finley Crebolder - Jan 4

Formula 1 is getting dangerously close to becoming motorsportrCOs
version of WWE, says former driver Stefan Johansson.

The 2021 campaign featured one of the most spectacular climaxes ever
with Max Verstappen overtaking Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the
final race to win the title ahead of the Mercedes driver.

While it was thrilling though, it was also hugely controversial due to
the fact that Michael Masi ignore normal protocol to set up the
grandstand finish, allowing the five lapped cars between the two title
rivals to unlap themselves under the Safety Car rCo but no others so that there would be enough time for a final lap in racing conditions.

The race directorrCOs decision to do so has divided opinion with some
praising him for creating such a thrilling spectacle and others feeling
he broke the rules for the sake of entertainment.

Johansson is very much part of the latter camp and is worried itrCOs
becoming like WWE, the scripted wrestling competition.

rCLIn the end, I think both Max and Lewis deserved to win the title this year,rCY he said on his blog.

rCLThey both drove at such a high level and both their teams operated at equally high levels, and it would have been such an incredible ending to
the year to have it decided fair and square on the racetrack.

rCLInstead, we now have this endless controversy and polarization. IrCOm
sure the folks at Liberty are not complaining as this has lifted F1 to a
whole new level in terms of people following.

Not necessarily a downside depending on the larger.

Mixing generations but picture him chasing Eddy Jordan around the paddock.

Eddy's ability to mock would make that worth the price of admission.

    Well,
I do not know where Formula 1 is heading.
I do not know where motorsports in the USA or the
rest of the world is heading.
It sure seems that some major decisions will need
to be made in the next years.
Oh, so many major decision points.

But to somewhat touch XYXPDQ's point:
Motorsports started as a small sport, but
the original developers did realize that
doing well at racing, did improve sales of
    their cars that did well.
And also some parts and suppliers got in the
act, so auto racing became advertising as well
as a sport and technology improvement demonstration.
It was seen by many as a 'sport' for gentlemen that
had a code of behavior, and no contact was allowed.

Many of the biggest players sent their best
engineers to the racing side to push new improvements
    and sharpen their skills.

Lately it has become seriously big business as
    an form of entertainment.

Meanwhile, over in the USA, in NASCAR, gradually
more 'rubbin is racin' became allowed.

By the way, how many times in 2021 did Hamilton's
car and Verstappen's car make contact with each other?

I'm pretty sure that Jim Clark and Graham Hill never
    made contact.

    I read:
