    There's just not really anything that would be more efficient that spur
    gears and dog rings.

    My car's gearbox got the same sort of isotropic superfinishing as the F1
    box's components got, so aside from the mechanism to make it shift sequentially, the F1 is quite similar to an LD200 with twice as many ratios.

    apart - fixing the lay-gear bearings on my Triumph 2.5 back in the day ...

    I was expecting cogs with fancy complex curves packed into a more
    compact geometry, or something ...

    Once you've developed the involute tooth form, there just isn't more optimization to be done...

    ...and if you make a much more compact geometry, you just make servicing
    the box more difficult.
