• Jeddah 2021 - Demo Derby ?

    From geoff@24:150/2 to rec.autos.sport.f1 on Mon Dec 6 17:19:47 2021
So what do you get when you stick 21 cars on a high-speed, road-circuit,
narrow track, with few run-off areas, and barriers both sides right
adjacent to most of it ?

    Guess that's confirmed ...

Honestly, I don't want to see this track again.

If you drive flat-out--as an F1 driver should have a reasonable
opportunity to do, then any small mistake can then result in a huge crash.

There needs to be room for small mistakes to have small consequences.

People have said for years that, while Monaco is never going to lose its
race, we shouldn't be adding any more circuits that are like Monte Carlo.

I loved the race. Attacks, hits, big risks, and that vital ingredient: drivers who hate each other.
It puts me in mind of the era when Michael Andretti and Paul Tracy 'swapped punches' in Indy car racing. This is what fans pay to see.

And consequences not only for the car involved, but effectively
    neutralises the race for all.

Stoppages, re-starts, racing advantages wiped each time, chances of
    further mayhem each re-start ?

Those that that appeals to would maybe be better-served watching a
    Demolition Derby.

Mostly agree, but there is a grey area. I never watch F2, but when Baku
began I decided to watch the F2 too, so I could learn the circuit before
the F1, and that was a crashathon. I quickly concluded I hated the
circuit for the reasons you mention - little fuckups led to multiple
cars retiring and stopped sessions. However, when the big boys arrived,
it suddenly became a driveable track, and now I'm rather fond of
it. Politics aside, Jeddah might just need a few minor tweaks and then
could be a great technical circuit (but of course, might not). Politics included - fuckit & fuckem.
