• Unprofessional petty spitefulness

    From Jonny@24:150/2 to rec.sport.rowing on Thu Oct 15 08:59:22 2020
    Dear Carl,
I was called by the rower that you had been so unhelpful and rude to. I did warn her that you wouldn't help, but she didn't believe that someone in your position would be so childish or unprofessional.
You win a cheap point. She's probably going to pass on buying this boat because you refused to look in your records to double check the hull size.
I know that you bear irrational grudges against a number of people, including myself, but to drag innocent third parties into this in an attempt to get at me is just petty spiteful behaviour.
After you banned me from buying parts from your webshop a few years ago (not that you've ever been brave enough to tell me yourself) I told you directly that I think you exhibit the early signs of dementia (possibly related to your heart surgery) and you like to deny this.
    That's fine.
If I'm wrong, then the only possible remaining explanation is that you are simply an unpleasant and nasty old man.

What a fool to publicly expose the monumental chip on his shoulder!

Sadly, after his ad hominem attack in RSR a year or so ago, this was
    hardly unexpected.

I'd not normally respond to such garbage but, given the worldwide reach
of RSR, I have to do so.

Please understand that Jonny Cantwell is persona non grata not only with
us but with leading racing-shell builders both here and in Australia.

He worked here for 6 months in 2016, leaving under a cloud having
breached his signed and witnessed confidentiality agreement, left
defective work and upset staff relations. But we wished him well.

In 2017 he emailed a grotesque personal attack, which he had shared with others, and which included a charmless allegation (as above) that I was suffering from pre-senile dementia. He added that he felt under no
obligation to honour his confidentiality agreement.

Some may recall his vituperative attack in RSR a year or so ago, to
which neither I nor anyone else responded.

I always make every effort to help anyone seeking information on any
pre-owned products of ours, however old. Jonny knows I'd help anyone -
except him. But he has a problem in identifying a boat he wants to
sell. So a lady from Twickenham RC (with a New Zealand accent) called
this morning - as the would-be buyer. She was incredibly demanding,
insisting that I tell her the crew weight of this boat. She was
"desperate to have it", so I must help her! She said she was buying it
from the boatman of Thames RC, whose name she could not recall. I was intrigued that she, not her vendor, was asking me this and that they
were unable, she said, to find the inscribed build data.

I'd already been told by several people that this might happen. On
quizzing the lady more closely, her story didn't add up. So I politely explained why, in this unique instance, I could not help further.

It is not my business to damage anyone, nor would I wish to do so. I
prefer to leave Mr Cantwell to shoot at his own foot.

    Carl

    Hi Carl,
Good to see that you were paying attention. I didn't actually expect you to answer though!
What a fool to publicly expose the monumental chip on his shoulder!
I've actually exposed my frustration at your behaviour. It's taken me about 4 years to do it though.
I really shouldn't be doing this (as no one else really needs to see it), but here's a hearty "fuck you" and your unpleasant shit.
I think I'm 'Covid Crazy', but honesty is always the best policy (actually it's not, but I really don't care at this stage).

Sadly, after his ad hominem attack in RSR a year or so ago, this was
    hardly unexpected.
My 'attack' was actually a defence of the poor bloke who designed the Randal Foil. You laid in to him pretty hard and criticized him for doing things that I know you've done yourself. The hypocrisy needed calling out.

I'd not normally respond to such garbage but, given the worldwide reach
of RSR, I have to do so.
You didn't respond because I was correct. Hit nerves can be a bit like that.

Please understand that Jonny Cantwell is persona non grata not only with
us but with leading racing-shell builders both here and in Australia.
    Hmmm. Only you.
Actually, I have wondered if one UK business was acting a bit fishy, and I presumed that you'd been telling them tall tales.
You've told a few tall tales, haven't you Carl?
Apparently I was to blame for some for some defective riggers. Someone looked it up - and guess what readers, it was a set from before I'd even arrived!
    Whoops!
I also know that I'm apparently the cause of some poor chap's very expensive Rosewood boat delaminating. I'm not sure how he works that out. I wasn't the chief laminator. I was simply assisting as it was a two man job. It seems that the Rosewood is a bit oily and has in the past occasionally had small delaminated spots. Instead of being a real man and admitting this and then fixing it, Carl likes to flail about and blame any handy villain (I was conveniently to hand...) and then set about doing a poor repair. Instead of treating the small spots, he's tried to half re-skin the boat and made it worse.
I have more stories but you don't need to hear it. You'd think I was responsible for Lord Lucan disappearing if you let Carl prattle on!

He worked here for 6 months in 2016, leaving under a cloud having
breached his signed and witnessed confidentiality agreement, left
defective work and upset staff relations. But we wished him well.
Not exactly true. In fact, barely a true statement here at all. He can't even count his months properly!
I left because Carl was a poor tutor and a difficult taskmaster, prone to over-reation to minor things.
We agreed that our world views were different and we parted with a shake of hands.
Yes, errors were made as I was learning a lot of new and complex tasks with very little supervision and very poor training. None of my errors left the shop despite what Carl might claim.
Then Carl decided to be an arsehole.
He cancelled a webshop order for parts without explanation. I did ask why, but got no reply.
However, another staff member (now ex) filled me in.
I then sent Carl a bit of a 'rocket' email that he refers to below.

In 2017 he emailed a grotesque personal attack, which he had shared with others, and which included a charmless allegation (as above) that I was suffering from pre-senile dementia. He added that he felt under no obligation to honour his confidentiality agreement.
Since he was going to behave like this, I owed him nothing and considered myself no longer under any obligation to him. Let's ignore the small legal detail that his agreement is fundamentally unenforceable by law. It was at best a 'gentleman's agreement' and he'd just dispelled any notion that he was a gentleman.
My assessment of early onset dementia (as related to heart conditions that Carl has) is fairly common.
Although I could be wrong. He could simply be an arsehole.
Why should I consider myself under any 'gentleman's' obligation to someone who had acted in an ungentlemanly way?
I put him on notice and he failed to respond. Try enforcing that now (and yes, I've had legal advice - something about lack of legs to stand on).

Some may recall his vituperative attack in RSR a year or so ago, to
which neither I nor anyone else responded.
You had nothing your could say and everyone else was too shocked or embarrsessed to comment.

I always make every effort to help anyone seeking information on any pre-owned products of ours, however old. Jonny knows I'd help anyone - except him. But he has a problem in identifying a boat he wants to

were unable, she said, to find the inscribed build data.
The lady in question is at another club, but she has previously been at Twickenham. I had warned her that you wouldn't help, but she didn't believe that you'd be so childish. It's not a strange request for someone other than the vendor to confirm the build details of a boat.
The build data is not visible on this boat. For some reason you insist on handwriting it underneath the deck instead of putting serial numbers or proper built plates on things. It's a 35+ year old boat. Of course it is no longer visible.

I'd already been told by several people that this might happen.
Thanks for confirming that. I shall be having a chat to a couple of people.

On quizzing the lady more closely, her story didn't add up. So I politely explained why, in this unique instance, I could not help further.
You wouldn't help because you are a nasty vengeful arsehole. No other reason.

It is not my business to damage anyone, nor would I wish to do so. I
prefer to leave Mr Cantwell to shoot at his own foot.
You've been attempting to damage me for years. People do tell me.
Well Carl, I'll leave it to the readers.
Your reputation as being "eccentric" (a lovely and very British way of saying "unpleasant psycho" without actually saying it) is very well known.
A few people here have met us both and will know the truth.

Jonny, I couldn't care less about you, you paranoid illogicality or your insults.

Your descent into anal obscenity when words failed you is hardly going
to help. Do you not see what a fool your diving into the gutter,
desperate to drag me in for a fight, proves you to be? You remind me of
the episode in the late Douglas Adams' Hitch-hiker's Guide to the
Galaxy, in which Marvin, the paranoid android, confronts the battle machine: http://www.angelfire.com/ca3/tomsnyder/hg-2-07.html

Please read to the end of that excerpt. If unfamiliar with the
Hitch-hiker's Guide it'll do you good, I'm sure. But if you recall that episode then do stop acting like the enraged battle machine. Take that
last bit, where it dawns on the battle machine that Marvin is completely unarmed for a fight:
"The machine heaved about with fury.
"Well, doesn't that just take the biscuit!" it roared, "Nothing, eh?
    Just don't think, do they?"
"And me," said Marvin in a soft low voice, "with this terrible pain in
all the diodes down my left side."
    "Makes you spit, doesn't it?"
    "Yes," agreed Marvin with feeling.
"Hell that makes me angry," bellowed the machine, "think I'll smash that
    wall down!"
The electron ram stabbed out another searing blaze of light and took out
the wall next to the machine.
"How do you think I feel?" said Marvin bitterly.
"Just ran off and left you, did they?" the machine thundered.
    "Yes," said Marvin.
"I think I'll shoot down their bloody ceiling as well!" raged the tank.
It took out the ceiling of the bridge.
    "That's very impressive," murmured Marvin.
"You ain't seeing nothing yet," promised the machine, "I can take out
    this floor too, no trouble!"
It took out the floor, too.
"Hell's bells!" the machine roared as it plummeted fifteen storeys and
smashed itself to bits on the ground below.
"What a depressingly stupid machine," said Marvin and trudged away.

Only in a fool's world do people pretend that someone not challenging libellous allegations makes those allegations true. That's pure
    playground talk.

Jonny, good manners cost nothing but it seems you have quite a problem
    with the world.

Rec.sport.rowing has been a civilised, self-regulating forum and for >20
years had not seen your brand of degrading public abuse. If you'd just
wind in your neck you'd be doing everyone, including yourself, a
    considerable favour.

    Carl
