• An observation from the USA

    From Mike Holmans@24:150/2 to rec.sport.cricket on Thu Dec 17 20:14:14 2020
I have a friend in the US who decided to try watching cricket,
starting with the Tests in England a few months ago. He's become an
addict in very short order. He prefers Test cricket because it's
better, but we've watched the CPL, IPL and LPL, and have started on
    the BBL.

He just asked me whether the Ozcomms ever watch any cricket outside
Australia, because they appear to know nothing about Nicolas Pooran.
And as he says, he's just some rando from the US, and he feels he
knows Pooran's game inside and out.

And having watched the last 3 hours of today's Test, I now understand
Alvey's rants. All they ever talk about is their own playing days.

It just makes me appreciate how good the UK Sky Sports commentary is:
they spend their time analysing techniques and tactics to the nth
degree, and manage not to be patronising or too abstruse for a
    neophyte like my mate.

    Cheers,

    Mike

Our TV commentary is pathetic. Luckily I can sync the ABC Grandstand

I thought the Ch 9 commentary was ordinary but it is stellar compared Ch

Ahhh yes. There was a classic Dorothy Dixer on Fox yesterday.

Comm A: Tell me Shane, who was the best bat you bowled to?
SKW: [Endless tedious and pointless recollections]

On the positive though, Fox have got Isa & Skull. If they'd punt SKW and
MEW (How does he get so many comms gigs?) things would improve
    significantly.

as spending time watching their tedious, Laws plagued, silly and
    anachronistic game.

What did you think about yesterdays play? bit slow but very interesting. imo

Agreed. Starc bowled much better than his recent white ball form, Cummins bowled the ball of the day to remove Agarwal, Hazlewood was good with the
2nd new ball at the tail, but once again annoyed me with his defensive
bowling at the top order. Sooo wide of off-stick. Lyon was excellent and,
apu, could have had three or four, and Green was uber impressive. He really could be a force if he stays injury free. Like his batting, he's got such a simple bowling action that there's not a lot that can go wrong. Seam
position was best in breed. Which leads to... Am very keen to see in the Indians bend it today as the much feared swerving of the pink ball was
almost totally absent on Day 1.

Kohli was a couple of classes above his team-mates and Rahane will be
almost impossible to beat as Australian player of the match.

I don't dispute the perceptiveness and astuteness of the comments.
Danny Morrison is the worst commentator in the world, but at least
with him there are usually two other people who have some sense and occasionally tell him that he's talking rubbish. With this lot,
there's no relief from three old farts boring on about going out to
dinner with Sachin Tendulkar. Not to rant would show orders of
magnitude more restraint that Pujara's batting.

Oddly, when he commentates for Sky Sports, he's interesting and
informative, particularly when discussing the techniques of spin
    bowling.

I don't mind reminiscences which are relevant to the action at hand,
like Atherton telling us about having difficulty with some bowler who
was very similar to the one currently on show, and when Warne does it
on Sky, it is usually pertinent.

So the button wouldn't get used much over here. Except when watching

Yair, that phenomena was noted way back in the day when Nein ruled the
waves. It's seriously odd too, as it's contrary to the axiom that people
    behave worse when they're overseas.

Back in those nightmare Nein days even the Sinney mouth-breathers got sick
of Tubs, Slats, Warnie et al putting the game in front of them second to
    yee hawing about themselves.

It looks line Rahane's name will have been crossed off Kohli's Christmas
    card list.
