    Good for Ralf Schumacher.

One can argue that Lewis is the greatest of his own time, sure. It's a reasonable position to hold. I happen to think there are perhaps two or three other drivers who are at least as good as he is, but that doesn't matter here.

I donrCOt think it is possible to compare drivers of different generations
and I agree that one can only say that a particular individual was the best
of his time. Given mechanical reliability Jim Clark was virtually
unbeatable and must certainly be included in the pantheon of rCLgreatsrCY but today, thanks in large part to the advent of karting, there is such a huge
pool of talent that I think he would have problems besting the likes of Hamilton or Verstappen, who have got to the top in the face of far more
severe competition than Jimmy ever faced.

I am also uncomfortable with the concept of rCLgreatnessrCY as applied to current drivers; I think one needs the perspective of time to be able to
judge that. ItrCOs easy now to designate Senna as amongst the rCLgreatsrCY but that was not necessarily obvious at the time.

The physical-fitness and mental requirements of today's hi-end
motorsport drivers are somewhat higher than in the 'old days' when any
old cigar-sucking alcoholic could participate if sufficiently
    well-connected and/or financial.

Yep, good point. In fact I would say that those requirements are of a completely different order of magnitude.
I can easily imagine the contempt with which Innes Ireland, say, would have treated the professionalism of modern drivers.

    Different world.
