• Congrats to Lewis and Britain

    From bra@24:150/2 to rec.autos.sport.f1 on Wed Dec 30 17:00:40 2020
Inspiring news that Hamilton gets a knighthood.

Already, back when Lewis had won 'only' five world driving championships I was wondering why the nation was not excited. Seven did it.

    Proud to be British today.

Looking back, Jackie Stewart got his knighthood for only three WC's, but of course Jackie wore a suit and tie and mixed with royalty.

And the fact that he has for many years lived in Switzerland did not affect
his being offered a knighthood whereas HamiltonrCOs Monaco residency was said to be the reason he was not offered one sooner.

I'm still not excited, but I find the whole honours system ridiculous

Much of it, I agree, but, although somewhat degraded by being awarded
almost automatically to senior civil servants I still think a knighthood carries considerable kudos.

Indeed, that is what makes Sir Jackie a very worthy recipient.

As much as I am a fan of Lewis I am still not 100% certain he has done
enough to warrant a knighthood (simply being good at your job no mater
how impressive that job is is not really enough for me).
Although this year he has done a lot to highlight race discrimination
(there would have been none of that stamp out racism stuff at the start
of each race without lewis kicking up a fuss).

I don't make the decisions however so I am very pleased for him.
