• UK - Knighthood for Lewis Hamilton

    The Colony may not understand.

LH definitely deserves a Knighthood now. If Andy Murray can get one for being a so so tennis player, and occasionally a No 1, LH should have got one by now - he has been at No 1 for years.

Aren't these things generally done after a person retires? IMO he shouldn't get one while still
actively driving in F1 but without a doubt he should be honoured afterwards.

The convention normally only relates to sports people, who are
recognised for sporting prowess alone, and only to Knight/Damehoods.

It has not been adhered to in several recent cases - Mo Farah, Jess Ennis-Hill, Alistair Cook, Chris Hoy, Sarah Storey, Bradley Wiggins,
    Laura Davies, Lee Pearson.

Starmer was knighted for service before he became a politician. Quite a
few (mostly Tory) MPs are knighted while they remain in the House.

I've never been sure why any sportspeople deserve knighthoods, they get
paid millions to do what most of us do for recreation. There are far
more deserving people who do work for relatively little reward to

Most sports people that get knighted do not not get it only for their
sporting prowess. They are very often involved in other things (often
not made public) to help people and they get the knighthood because of that.

I don't know if the New Years List issued last December was typical, but
there appear to have been 19 Knights and 18 Dames. There were no
    sportspeople.

I imagine there would be a similar number in a typical Birthday Honours
list, but there wasn't a typical list this year.

There have been around 150 sporting knights & dames dating back to 1926
very few who received the honour before the 1980s (maybe later) would
have earned millions from their sport.

Hamilton talked about the possibility last year when he was nominated.

'When asked last year by reporters about whether he thought he would be knighted, and what his thoughts were on the Royal Family, he said: rCLI donrCOt think it is going to happen."

rCLBut that doesnrCOt bother me. It doesnrCOt mean I am not British and I will continue to try and raise the flag as well as I can."

"rCLJust the fact that people have mentioned it, is an honour, but I have
not spent my life chasing it. It is just not something you grow up
    thinking of.

rCLBut if it did happen I donrCOt know how I would handle it. I have stood
in front of Her Majesty the Queen before and it was incredible. She
    really is awesome.rCY

'David Richards, chairman of Motorsport UK, and Lord Hain, the former
Labour cabinet member, wrote to Prime Minister Boris Johnson making the
case for Hamilton's recognition in the New Year honours last year.

The letters to Mr Johnson made the point that Hamilton's story is inspirational: the boy from a Stevenage council house who became the
first black driver in Formula One.

Lord Hain, who serves on the All Party Parliamentary Group for F1,
researched the claim that Hamilton rCo despite living in Monaco rCo is among the UK's 5,000 biggest taxpayers.

The Mercedes star's earnings allow him to contribute a significant
amount to the exchequer while working in Britain, where his team is based.

The revelations come in spite of criticism fired at the F1 star for his decision to live in Monaco, due to its notorious approach to tax.'
