TikTok to be saved in the US as Trump confirms a deal with China ahead
    of upcoming ban

So now both the Chinese and US governments will have all of your
    information you share...lovely.

I have never had an account on TikTok and never will.

From what I understand, that app asks some very invasive questions...

Considering how long I've been on computers (Since 1983) - IOW not
some old guy who's uninformed about them - the BBS system is the
only social networking I've even used.. No Facebook or Twitter or
Snapchat, etc.. and I've never even looked into TikTok..

I got swept into the FB hype. I think I was still on dialup
when FB came around. My oldest posts seems to be in 2008. At
first it seemed like a good way to share photos to friends
instead of emailing them individually - just one upload to FB
(via dialup) and a simple email announcement where to find
    them.

But then FB seemed to strain more and more under dialup. It was
still a bit of a struggle even when I finally adopted mobile
    (2G).

Then gradually, I got fed up with all the added crap FB was
pushing and wasting my mobile data!

I might still check it out once or twice a week to see if any
of my friends have new or interesting photos, but that's about
    it for me and FB.

TikTok seems like a total waste of time. Never subscribed.
Had a look at some Twitter links, but never subscribed.
Instagram.. another one I don't care for - just image posts
with little to no context. Some people send links to instagram
vid clips that are supposed to be informational, but those only
seem to work best on a mobile phone.

All in all, you're not missing much by avoiding the social
    media apps.

A lot of people seem to be dropping it these days, but probably
are starting up with some new thing that's basically the same
    under a new name..

Meet the new boss.. same as the old boss.. B)

That said, I was talking with my brother today and we were
thinking about relatives we haven't seen or heard from in
ages and I remembered one cousin who had all the family info
on her Facebook page. She had also searched our history back
to some ancestors in Canada as far back as 1650 and traced
some of our relatives in Scotland to back in 1595. She took
a trip to Europe/Britain to a lot of these places checking
grave yards and ancient church birth records and such..

(Yes, I know I'm Irish, but I have a few ancestors from
Scotland, England, Germany and France as well..)

We were thinking it might be interesting to have a look at
that if we could find her page, although I suppose you have
to be registered with Facebook as a user to even request to
get 'friend' access to someone else's page.

Yes... much easier to conduct searches with a registered
    account. Go for it.

I "discovered" a couple of long-lost friends with a casual
    search through FB.

    Hello August!

Funny, I was just reading a book were the one of the main
characters had the first name August. That's the only other
place I've run across that.. B)

Of course it turned out that was an alias for the character
and August was used to suggest importance or honoured..

Over the years I've run across a few long lost relatives when
something unusual puts us together. We don't ever seem to stay
in touch long though. I pretty much always answer any eMails
I get so it would likely be them not responding to me..

I guess I'm not as interesting as I thought... B(
