DoorDash Warns Customers Their Order Will Take Longer If They Don't Tip

DoorDash added a pop-up this week when you add a custom tip of zero
dollars, warning customers that their no-tip delivery may take longer.

"Orders with no tip might take longer to get delivered - are you sure you
want to continue?" the warning reads, according to The Verge. "Dashers can
pick and choose which orders they want to do. Orders that take longer to
be accepted by Dashers tend to result in slower delivery."

The warning is "something that we're currently testing to help create the
best possible experience for all members of our community," Jenn
Rosenberg, a DoorDash spokesperson, told the outlet.

"Everyday, Dashers go the extra mile to help connect consumers with the
best of their local communities. That's why we encourage customers to show
their appreciation by tipping," Rosenberg continued.

"Dashers" are independent contractors, so they have the freedom to accept
or decline offers, "based on what they view as valuable and rewarding,"
according to Rosenberg. She added a majority of people do tip however,
it's "less desirable" for dashers if an order doesn't contain a tip.

In 2019, DoorDash reworked its tipping policy, adopting a pay-based rate,
according to their website. Drivers get a base pay depending on the
"duration, distance, and desirability of the order" and the entire tip
goes to them. The original policies included tipped wages, according to
The Verge, meaning it requires an employee to earn the state's minimum
wage with tips and wages combined.

Andy Newman, a delivery service driver, explained in a 2019 New York
Times article, "For my first order, the guarantee was $6.85 and the
customer, a woman in Boerum Hill who answered the door in a colorful
bathrobe, tipped $3 via the app. But I still received only $6.85."

"Here's how it works: if the woman in the bathrobe had tipped zero,
DoorDash would have paid me the whole $6.85. Because she tipped $3,
DoorDash kicked in only $3.85. She was saving DoorDash $3, not tipping
    me," he continued.

In June, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the city would implement
a new minimum wage for DoorDash and Uber Eats drivers. These delivery apps
would have to pay their NYC drivers at least $19.96, according to a press
release. In July, four delivery services sued NYC over the law raising the
    minimum wage.

"Bad policies cannot go unchallenged, and we will not stand by and let the
harmful impacts of this earnings standard on New York City customers,
merchants, and the delivery workers it was intended to support go
unchecked," a DoorDash spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation. ===

DoorDash Warns Customers Their Order Will Take Longer If They Don't Tip

I think there is a cultural schism here, but I think the employer (DoorDash in this case) ought to pay the employees enough money so they don't need tips. Then customers would handle tips only at exceptional service - which happens to be the Spanish way).

I think when you normalize tips they stop representing what they ought to represent.

well dashers can't see that 0 tip. but we can figure it out if they want us to get a mcdonalds order for 4 dollars.

what doordash usually does is pair up a notip order with a good tipping order to get it done. it can be from totally different restaurants. the delivery locations can be no where near eachother.

i'm pretty sure doordash will get a class action lawsuit or 2 eventually.

i'm not so sure they can do that because they are contractors.
i also have the ability to choose an hourly flat rate with tips (but they warn tips might be less) or the regular way. the hourly can go from 14-16-19/hr depending on the time.

not sure if i'm going to be doing this in the winter/snow because roads are horrible here. last feb i had something in the road poke up and rip off my tailpipe

i think doordash should pay MORE PER MILE because of gas prices, but i don't want to be an employee and i do not want an hourly wage.

Definitely, It's like how wait staff gets paid USD $2.13 an hour. Hoowever, here in Tennessee, that law states that wait staff has to make $7.50 an hour so if a waitress, for example, doesn't make $7.50 an hour combined with tips during a shift, the restaurant owner must pay the difference so it goes up to $7.50/hour.

I think when you normalize tips they stop representing what they ought

Yes and no. I only tip in certain situations and when I felt the service was worth the tip.

Tipping here in the US drives my European friends nuts so when they visit, they ask me if I should tip or not and if so, how much.

I figure it this way: if I can afford a food delivery, I can afford a tip also. Last night, I ordered a sandwich and some past from Dominos. Not cheap on my budget but it was my one "treat" for the month. I still gave the driver a 20% tip.

I normally try to give all drivers a 20% tip. If I have cash, I'll give them the tip directly (no need getting corporate involved).

what doordash usually does is pair up a notip order with a good
tipping order to get it done. it can be from totally different restaurants. the delivery locations can be no where near eachother.

I've heard that before and have been told all it means is the driver breaks even on that run.

i'm pretty sure doordash will get a class action lawsuit or 2

California will probably be the first.

Ah, a 1099 guy. How companies get out of paying money or providing benefits. I used to be a 1099 guy in IT but I was making between $50-$70 an hour (average). 16% of all monies went into a special bank account to pay my SS tax since I was a sole propriator(sp?) business.

not sure if i'm going to be doing this in the winter/snow because
roads are horrible here. last feb i had something in the road poke up
    and rip off my tailpipe.

I hope I can find a way to get a car soon. It's hell for me to get around during the winter without a car. It's just bad enough walking down my access ramp bit I keep calcium chloride de-icer handy (won't cause oxidation on aluminum nor rust in iron-based metals).

a woman with a great rack and good skills can make a LOT on tips. A male waiter who is attentive and has good skills can make good money too.

I'm in a liberal area and a handful of restaurants give benefits and a 'living wage of 12-21/hr'.

I'm pretty sure they had some real staffing issues and they went back to tips.

I only do not tip when the person is horrible. and i write on the receipt what their issue was. that's probably about 2 times.

i think it was buffalo wildwings both times. i hate that dump.

there's tricks where you can get discounts and still give a decent trip.
uber eats does 2 for one deals. so you can buy a meal for now and have one for later and then tip.

i tip about 5 bucks. i dont do a percentage.
most of the time i order on doordash and then pickup. another thing is since i'm a dasher a lot of the time i get promos or coupons. i had 30% off 5 orders recently.

i'm pretty sure doordash will get a class action lawsuit or 2 eventually.

California will probably be the first.

yeah probably but it needs to be done. doordash does pull some bullshit.
also i'm real high rated and once i started hitting it it hard and making ok money, they started throwing the shit onces at me. like 4 dollars or less, and i'd have to drive several miles.

here's some examples of what i'm getting now.
    https://i.imgur.com/9daUfhW.png
this one is kinda decent because of the tip. but still low

    here's another
    https://i.imgur.com/2xwtMfq.png

now this one had real low pay but the tip was ok.
i had to drive FAR for this one.

this cheap bitch pretending like i delivered to the wrong address.
she probably wanted the whole thing for free.
so she called me and acted like it wasn't there and i acted like i drove off, but i was still there and i busted her red handed.

I used to sit at the counter at a well-known restaurant near our house
    - it was the only way to get a table some times! Watching the kitchen
    was interesting.

The guy wasing dishes was the hardest working guy I've ever seen - he
    never stopped moving.

We'd sit right near the spot where waiters/waitresses would pick up
their orders from the mostly hispanic cook staff.

    1. The blonde waitress with big boobs and a beautiful smile always got
    her orders up first.

    2. The bookish brunette who spoke Spanish to the staff was similarly
    well treated.

    3. The waiter who said "please" and called the chef "chef" got his
    dishes in a similar fashion.

    4. The Asian waiter who pounded the counter with his palm got the "no
habla" look from the staff. I made a mental note not to want to sit in
    his area.
