I find that with the HP DL-series it depends on how much workload the CPU's are being slammed with. Idling CPU means less temperature, so the fans don't kick in as much.

The biggest problem and complaint I have about HP servers is that they must have HP SAS drives, or at least drives with HP-compatible Smart reporting or firmware. Otherwise what happens is the backplane sensor doesn't get a correct temperature reading thus HP BIOS assumes a problem, thus the fans are driven full-blast to compensate for really nothing.

HP makes very nice servers but just that one minor fine-print is annoying. That and you must have a commercial service contract to get BIOS updates.

But I'm used to the noise as you are...

But I'm used to the noise as you are...

I should have built a server rack into my storage space... I'd thought about it, work tossed out 2 R610s and 2 R720s and I'd given serious thought to finding them homes.

I ended up picking up a Dell Optiplex 3050 desktop; I had enough RAM laying around to get it to 32GB of RAM. It's got an nvme slot, put a 1TB nvme to boot, a 3TB SATA for storage, and use NFS off of my Synology for backups and additional storage. It's pretty small, quiet and doesn't use a lot of power.

It's running on Proxmox, all I need it for is a Nutanix CE install I'm hosting for work, a Windows domain with a server and desktop, a couple of LXC containers and the BBS. It runs that load pretty well, along with whatever desktop VMs I want to throw at it for testing.

I'm not sure where Mark Hoffman got his, but I picked up a medium sized
rack cabinet... 15U for about $500CDN out of some shop in Montreal.

Do you not have chop-shops or similar tech equipment discount places where you live?

What made a huge difference for the overall health of the equipment were intake and exhaust units from AC Infinity. The air is circulated in from the bottom of the rack and exhausted from the top by sets of fans that are tied to a really nice control unit.

I'm not against Optiplex, there are some good models but figured with the sort of work you do that you'd have rack gear at your house?

I've got a fully loaded DL380 under one of my desks, not that I turn it on. It raised the room temperaure into the 90's while I had my house AC set to 82 and the fans are so loud. Someone has a video on youtube on how to replace them with quieter ones. It's also stuffef full of SAS drives plus the PSUs.

Needless to say, it's never used.

what a pitty, I think mine has 256gb of ram, and just under 1 terrabytes of hard disk space in 6 drives. And its a dl-360. it runs kf5qeo.servebbs.net on pepermint linux right now. was running ubuntu, but something weird was happening to the video, and it ran really slow on the desktop, but fine when i ssh'ed in from my phone.
