    Strong thunderstorms with potential to produce a few damaging wind
    gusts are possible in a corridor across the south central Great
    Plains through Mid South and Tennessee Valley Saturday afternoon and
    evening.

    ...Discussion...
    Large-scale mid/upper ridging is forecast to continue building
    across much of interior North America through this period, with the
    strong core of the ridge expanding northeastward and encompassing
    much of the Four Corners states through middle Missouri Valley by
    late Saturday night. While one notable short wave trough is forced
    inland across the British Columbia coast, increasingly split
    downstream troughing is forecast to progress toward the northwestern
    Atlantic, and offshore of the north Atlantic Seaboard. A lingering
    mid-level shear axis, trailing to the west of the latter troughing,
    may slowly continue to shift south of the Mid Atlantic and lower
    Ohio/Missouri Valleys through the period.

    In general, the risk for organized severe convection appears low
    Saturday through Saturday night, or at least dependent on mesoscale perturbations with low predictability at this time frame. However,
    there does appear a general consensus among model output that lower/mid-tropospheric lapse rates may remain steep enough, above a
    seasonably moist boundary layer, to contribute to moderate CAPE (on
    the order of 1500-2000+ J/kg) in advance of the southward advancing
    shear axis. By late Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening, this
    may focus strong thunderstorm development in a corridor from the
    south central Great Plains into the Tennessee Valley. Some of this
    activity may evolve into small clusters with potential to produce
    strong to locally severe surface gusts.

    Strong to severe storms capable of sporadic occurrences of damaging
    wind and large hail are possible from the southern High Plains
    through the Tennessee Valley to the Mid-Atlantic and Carolinas
    Saturday afternoon and evening. Isolated severe storms are also
    possible in southern Arizona.

    ...Synopsis...

    A mid/upper-level high is forecast to strengthen while shifting from
    the lower CO Valley and Four Corners into the central Rockies. A
    belt of strong mid-level winds will develop across the Pacific
    Northwest into northern Rockies, between the high and an upper low
    along the British Columbia coast. Downstream from those
    developments, a shortwave trough is forecast to move through New
    England and the Mid-Atlantic with a mid-level wind shift/shear axis
    stretching from the central Plains into the TN Valley.

    At the surface, a front is expected to move through the Mid-Atlantic
    with the trailing extension of the boundary stretching through the
    Mid South/TN Valley into the southern High Plains.


    ...Central and Southern Plains...

    Widely scattered thunderstorm development is expected by afternoon
    along the surface front from southern KS and OK into the OK and TX
    Panhandles. The steepest mid-level lapse rates will remain confined
    to the High Plains with increasing boundary-layer moisture content
    with eastward extent, both of which are expected to yield a
    moderately unstable environment. The 12Z models indicate a channel
    of stronger mid-level winds within the eastern periphery of the
    upper high across the High Plains, which may enhance vertical shear
    across that segment of the frontal zone. As such, the potential for
    some storm organization appears to exist with an attendant risk for
    large hail and severe wind gusts.


    ...Ozark Plateau to Tennessee Valley...

    The potential for early-day storms introduces forecast uncertainty
    due to the possibility for lingering clouds and precipitation to
    limit the destabilization process in some areas. Where stronger
    heating can occur, the presence of a moist boundary layer will
    contribute to moderate to strong instability by the peak of the
    diurnal heating cycle. The synoptic front and residual outflow
    boundaries will likely focus the most intense storms with the
    mid-level shear axis potentially enhancing background forcing for
    ascent. Generally weak vertical shear will limit the potential for
    storm organization with the primary hazard being damaging wind
    gusts.


    ...Southern Mid-Atlantic into the Carolinas...

    The glancing influence of the shortwave trough moving through the
    Northeast will combine with convergence along the front and
    preceding lee trough to foster scattered afternoon storms. The
    strongest vertical shear is expected to remain to the north of the
    area; however, the presence of a moist and moderately unstable air
    mass will be supportive of a few strong storms capable of damaging
    downburst winds.


    ...Southern Arizona...

    Some enhancement of mid-level winds is forecast south of the upper
    high, yielding a corridor of stronger deep-layer shear, which will
    coincide with a moist and moderately unstable air mass. That
    environment will be supportive of a few strong to briefly severe
    storms with a risk for locally damaging wind gusts.

    ... Synopsis ...

    The western ridge will continue to build northward on Sunday, with
    the highest 500-mb heights (nearing 600 dam) becoming centered over
    the Dakotas. To the south and east of this substantial ridge,
    ensemble guidance has a highly-positively tilted trough, with
    perhaps an embedded closed low, across the Tennessee and Lower
    Mississippi Valleys.

    At the surface, a weak boundary will stretch from west-to-east from
    the Southern Plains into the Southeast. The exact location of this
    boundary will be highly influenced by repeated rounds of convection
    the prior two days.


    ... Southeast ...

    A very moist airmass will remain in place across the region with
    surface dewpoint temperatures in the 60Fs and 70Fs and precipitable
    water values around 2 inches likely to the south of the surface
    boundary. As diurnal heating occurs, scattered thunderstorms should
    once again develop along the residual surface boundary. Despite the
    proximity of a closed low/positively tilted trough, vertical wind
    shear will be generally less than 20 knots. The result will be
    scattered single cell and clusters of multicell thunderstorms
    capable of producing strong to perhaps damaging downbursts.


    ... Arizona ...

    Modest easterly mid-level flow will persist across Arizona on Sunday
    as the region remains south of the closed mid-level high over the
    northern US. At the surface, southerly to westerly winds will
    combine with this mid-level flow to support around 30 knots of
    deep-layer shear. Model guidance shows a seasonably moist airmass in
    place across much of southern and western Arizona, with surface
    dewpoints rising into the upper-50Fs to mid-60Fs. The warm, moist
    environment in place will support afternoon thunderstorm development
    across the favored higher terrain of the Mogollon Rim. The
    deep-layer flow should support at least a few of these storms moving
    west, off the terrain. Steep low-level lapse rates will support
    strong downward momentum transport capable of producing damaging
    wind gusts with any thunderstorm.

    surface low meandering across KY toward the central Appalachians. An
    outflow boundary is expected to be oriented across portions of the
    TN Valley westward into the southern Plains.

    ...ArkLaTex to GA/SC...

    A very moist airmass will be in place along/south of the surface
    boundary draped west to east across the region. These upper 60s to
    low 70s F dewpoints and strong heating will support moderate to
    strong instability and convection should develop by early afternoon
    along the surface boundary. Vertical shear will remain modest,
    generally around 20 kt or less, suggesting short-lived single cells
    and multicells clusters will be possible. High PW values and strong
    instability will support strong gusts with sporadic wind damage
    possible.

    ...AZ...

    Steep midlevel lapse rates and ample midlevel moisture will support
    isolated to scattered thunderstorm development within a weakly
    unstable airmass. A deeply mixed boundary layer and steep low-level
    lapse rates will allow for strong outflow winds as convection
    generally spreads westward across portions of southern into central
    AZ.

    The persistent CONUS-wide mid-level ridge centered across the
    north-central US will begin to flatten and elongate on Monday as a
    strong mid-level trough moves across central Canada. As the
    mid-level ridge flattens/elongates it will place much of the
    southern US in easterly mid-level flow. This easterly mid-level flow
    will cause a weak mid-level trough across the Tennessee Valley to
    retrograde. This high-over-low pattern will feature a belt of
    enhanced easterlies stretching from the lower Great Lakes west into
    the Central Plains.

    At the surface, a weak surface low over the southern Appalachians
    will redevelop westward toward Alabama during the afternoon. The
    combination of this surface low with a surface ridge centered across
    the Mid-Mississippi Valley will result in northerly low-level flow
    across much of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and western parts of
    the Southeast.


    ... Northern Florida into much of South Carolina ...

    As the surface low redevelops across Alabama on Monday, this area
    will experience southwesterly surface flow that will maintain a
    warm, moist airmass. Residual cooler mid-level temperatures (as
    compared to surrounding areas) associated with the weak mid-level
    trough and strong diurnal heating of this moist airmass will result
    in afternoon thunderstorms. Deep-layer shear remains weak across the
    area which should limit overall thunderstorm organization, favoring
    instead single cells and a few multicell clusters. A few heavy,
    water-loaded downdrafts will be capable of producing sporadic wind
    damage.

    A weak, cut-off upper low will likely be present in the vicinity of
    the Tennessee Valley/southern Appalachians. This may help to
    organize storms along a stalled surface boundary within GA/SC. A
    moist airmass will promote a few stronger storms capable of wind
    damage. The overall threat does appear marginal as lapse rates will
    be less steep than previous days.

    ...Arizona...
    With at least 50s F dewpoints remaining within parts of Arizona,
    thunderstorm activity can again be expected during the afternoon.
    With mid-level flow being slightly more out of the southwest and
    weakening with time, it is not certain how strong storms will become
    and how many will move into the lower deserts. Even so, strong gusts
    will be possible given the inverted-v thermodynamic profiles.

    ...Southwest Montana...
    Models show a convective signal during the late afternoon within the
    higher terrain of southwest Montana. Due to cloud cover, buoyancy
    will not likely be very strong. Stronger flow aloft would allow for
    isolated, organized storms should heating be greater than forecast.

    An expansive mid-level ridge centered over the north-central US will
    begin to retrograde on Tuesday as a strong short-wave trough digs
    southeast out of Canada toward New England. As the ridge builds
    west, the mid-level height gradient will increase across the
    northwestern US as a seasonably strong mid-level trough/closed low
    remains anchored off the Washington/Oregon coasts.

    ... New England ...

    Thunderstorms are expected to develop across portions of Quebec on
    Tuesday afternoon as a strong mid-level trough and attendant surface
    cold front move across the region. Ahead of this cold front,
    southwesterly surface winds will transport in rich boundary layer
    moisture, which will combine with diurnal heating to support MUCAPE
    in the 1500-2500 J/kg range. Strong vertical shear (on the order of
    50-60 knots) will overspread the region during the afternoon and
    evening, which will support one or more clusters of severe
    thunderstorms moving from Quebec into and across portions of New
    England during the late afternoon, evening, and early morning hours.
    All severe hazards will be possible with any sustained thunderstorm.

    One mitigating factor for a more significant severe weather event
    will be the timing of the storms. At this time, it appears
    thunderstorms will be moving across New England well after peak
    heating and into the overnight. Should the timing of storms be
    earlier than currently expected, greater coverage of thunderstorms
    may result and higher severe probabilities would be warranted.


    ... Portions of Western and Central Montana ...

    Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across the higher
    terrain of southwest Montana during the afternoon on Tuesday.
    Surface moisture will be better (surface dewpoints in the 50Fs) than
    in previous days, which should support greater afternoon buoyancy
    and in turn stronger thunderstorm updrafts. Strong
    south-southwesterly mid-level flow in between the trough to the west
    and ridge to the east will support thunderstorm organization and
    some severe potential as some of the storms move northeast off the
    higher terrain.

    A strong shortwave trough is expected to move into the region during
    the evening. The strongest forcing for ascent will likely arrive
    after dark. Still, low-level moistening will promote moderate to
    strong buoyancy even into the evening (1500-2500 J/kg MUCAPE). 50-60
    kt of 0-6 km shear will promote organized convection capable of
    large hail and severe wind gusts. A conditional tornado threat will
    also exist with any supercell structures that can remain surface
    based.

    ...Montana...
    Moderate to strong mid-level cyclonic flow will continue within the
    northern Rockies. An increase in low/mid-level moisture is expected
    as compared to previous days. A shortwave trough coupled with at
    least modest heating within the higher terrain will promote widely
    scattered to scattered storms. With an increase in cloud cover
    expected, it is not clear whether storms will be surface based.
    Severe wind gusts and marginally severe hail are possible with the
    strongest storms.

    Organized severe thunderstorms are not expected across the US on
    Wednesday.

    ... Synopsis ...

    A CONUS-wide mid-level ridge will remain entrenched across the
    central US, with a closed mid-level low located on either side of it
    -- one off the Pacific Northwest coast and the other across eastern
    Canada. A short-wave trough moving through the enhanced mid-level
    flow will impinge upon the northwest periphery of the US ridge,
    halting its westward expansion. On the eastern side, a strong
    short-wave trough will continue digging southeast across New
    England, helping to carve out a long wave trough across eastern
    Canada and the northeastern US. This in turn will suppress the US
    ridge southward along the East Coast, resulting in a
    northwest-to-southeast ridge axis across the eastern US.

    At the surface, a cold front will push south and westward across
    southern New England toward the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic. To the
    north of this boundary, seasonably cool and dry conditions will
    prevail, while along and south of this boundary, hot and humid
    conditions continue.


    ... Western and Central Montana ...

    Continued enhanced southwesterly mid-level flow will prevail across
    the northern Rockies on Wednesday. Embedded within this flow will be
    subtle vorticity/speed maxima. Large-scale ascent associated with
    these features, combined with diurnal heating will support scattered thunderstorms along the higher terrain of southwest Montana. After
    several days of repeated convection across Montana and in the
    mid-level lapse-rate source region upstream, uncertainty remains as
    to the number and intensity of thunderstorms that do develop. Should
    vigorous convection develop, the overall strength of the mid-level
    flow when coupled with steep lapse rates would support sporadic
    strong thunderstorm winds.

    The potential for organized severe storms continues to appear low on
    Wednesday.

    ...Synopsis...
    An expansive ridge will be present across the CONUS on Wednesday.
    Upper-level troughs will be present near the Northwest coast and in
    the Northeast, however. A few stronger storms will be possible
    within western and central Montana, though repeated convection on
    previous days will likely lead to cooler temperatures and uncertain
    storm intensity. While there still is some uncertainty to the track
    of the upper trough off the Northwest coast, some potential exists
    for gusty outflow wind in central/eastern Oregon. Across parts of
    the Mid-Atlantic, a moist and unstable airmass will be present south
    of a surface boundary. Subtle mid-level height falls may be enough
    to initiate isolated thunderstorms. However, there is also potential
    for the environment to stay capped. The environment would support
    damaging winds if storms can form.

    ... Synopsis ...

    The closed mid-level low off the coast of the Pacific Northwest will
    begin to lift north/northeast on Thursday. As it does, strong
    southerly mid-level flow will force height rises across the northern
    US Rockies and southwest Canada. These rising heights will allow the
    mid-level ridge across much of the US to redevelop northwestward
    --from the Midwest toward the northern US Rockies.

    At the same time, the second strong mid-level trough this week will
    move across New England, bringing with it a reinforcing shot of
    seasonably cool and dry air. A surface cold front will push
    southward through New England, ending up in the vicinity of the
    Mid-Atlantic by Friday morning.

    The airmass across much of the US, especially areas east of the
    Rockies, will be very warm and moist with afternoon temperatures
    generally 5-15 degrees above normal outside of areas with widespread
    cloud cover and precipitation. Mid-level flow will be generally weak
    across areas of the US with adequate buoyancy for thunderstorm
    development. Thus, the severe weather potential on Thursday remains
    too low to warrant unconditional severe weather probabilities.

    A deep-layer cyclone is expected to remain in place over parts of
    Labrador and northern Quebec on Thursday. A vigorous mid/upper-level
    shortwave is forecast to move through the base of the attendant
    trough across parts of northern New England. To the west, a
    mid/upper-level cyclone off of the Pacific Northwest coast is
    forecast to move north-northeastward toward Vancouver Island.
    Farther south, a persistent mid/upper-level trough will continue to
    bring a threat of widespread convection and heavy rainfall across
    parts of southwest TX and vicinity. Thunderstorm potential will
    cover a large part of the CONUS, though generally weak
    mid/upper-level flow should limit potential for organized convection
    across most areas.

    ...Northern New England...
    A strong reinforcing front will accompany the mid/upper shortwave
    moving across northern New England on Thursday. Guidance varies
    considerably regarding the extent of heating and destabilization
    along/ahead of this front. The more aggressive guidance (such as the
    NAM NEST and RRFS) depicts MLCAPE increasing to near/above 500 J/kg,
    sufficient for organized convection given the strength of the
    low-midlevel wind fields. Other guidance depicts very limited
    destabilization and severe potential. Depending on trends regarding destabilization and timing of the front, severe probabilities may
    eventually be needed.

    ...Mid-Atlantic...
    While large-scale ascent will generally be weak, strong heating in
    the vicinity of a remnant frontal zone may allow for isolated storm
    development across parts of the Mid-Atlantic and vicinity on
    Thursday. Low-level flow will be weak and deep-layer shear will be
    modest at best, but localized strong/damaging gusts could occur, if
    sustained storms develop within this hot and well-mixed regime.

    ...Interior Northwest...
    While the magnitude of diurnal destabilization across parts of the
    interior Northwest remains uncertain, some potential for
    strong-storm development could evolve as stronger mid/upper-level
    flow associated with the offshore low overspreads the region. This
    area will continue to be monitored regarding the need for severe
    probabilities.

    Thunderstorms will be possible across much of the country on Friday.
    Although a few strong storms may occur, areas of organized severe
    weather are not currently forecast.

    ... Synopsis ...

    Enhanced mid-level flow will persist across the Pacific Northwest
    and the Great Lakes/Northeast US along the periphery of a large
    mid-level anticyclone centered across the central US. Across the
    Northwest, strong southwesterly mid-level flow and embedded
    vorticity/speed maxima will contribute to shower and thunderstorm
    development during Friday afternoon and evening. Farther east,
    northwesterly mid-level flow will be in place across the Upper
    Midwest into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. A strong trough
    will be departing the Northeast at the start of the forecast period,
    and several smaller mid-level waves will be traversing the enhanced
    mid-level flow during the day. A stronger mid-level wave is forecast
    to approach the Upper Great Lakes overnight Friday into Saturday.

    At the surface, a residual synoptic boundary will stretch from the
    Upper Peninsula of Michigan southeast toward the vicinity of
    Washington D.C. early on Friday. By late morning, this boundary will
    begin lifting northeast across the Great Lakes region in response to
    the approaching mid-level trough. Farther southeast, this boundary
    will still be slowly sagging southward during the morning before
    stalling during the afternoon and quickly lifting northeast during
    Friday night into Saturday morning.

    A weak surface low will develop along this boundary across northern
    Minnesota by Friday morning. This low will slowly move
    east-southeast during the day, dragging a secondary cold front
    southeast across the Dakotas and into Wisconsin/southern Minnesota
    by Saturday morning.


    ... Upper Midwest southeast into the Mid-Atlantic ...

    Subtle/small vorticity maxima moving through the mid-level flow will
    yield modest large-scale ascent along portions of the frontal
    boundary. Strong diurnal heating of the moist airmass along and
    south of the boundary should support at least widely scattered
    thunderstorms. The surface boundary will be on the southwest fringe
    of the better mid-level flow, with effective-layer shear being
    generally less than 30 knots. This should limit any
    sustained/organized severe threat.

    One complicating factor/unknown will be the extent smoke plumes from
    northern Minnesota are advected into/across the region and their
    density. A thicker smoke plume may limit the degree of surface
    heating and impact the overall number of thunderstorms.

    There is a secondary potential for thunderstorms to develop along
    the secondary cold front late Friday into early Saturday as stronger large-scale ascent overspreads the Upper Great Lakes. The
    uncertainty as to whether this convection will be able to produce
    severe weather is quite large owing to the impacts of both smoke
    plumes and the cooler waters of Lake Superior.

    At this time the uncertainty associated with afternoon convection
    and the overnight convection is too great to introduce unconditional
    severe weather probabilities with this outlook, however, this region
    will be evaluated further with subsequent forecasts.

    Strong to potentially severe storms are possible on Friday across
    parts of western Montana and northern Idaho, and also across parts
    of the Upper Great Lakes region.

    ...Parts of ID/western MT...
    A relatively favorable thermodynamic environment is again expected
    to reside across parts of western MT and vicinity by Friday
    afternoon. Relatively steep lapse rates and sufficient moisture may
    result in MLCAPE increasing to near/above 1000 J/kg. A modest
    decrease in mid/upper-level flow is expected compared to
    D2/Thursday, as the region gradually becomes further removed from a mid/upper-level low moving across southwestern British Columbia.
    However, effective shear of 25-35 kt may develop where low-level
    flow remains east-southeasterly. Scattered thunderstorms are
    expected to develop during the afternoon and continue into at least
    the early evening. The strongest cells/clusters will be capable of
    producing isolated hail and strong to severe gusts.

    ...Parts of the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes...
    Multiple low-amplitude midlevel vorticity maxima may move
    southeastward across parts of the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes through
    early evening, before a stronger shortwave trough approaches the
    region by late Friday night. A frontal zone initially draped from
    northern IL/IN into northern MN will begin to shift northward as a
    warm front, while a cold front will move through parts of the
    Dakotas and northwest MN. Diurnal heating may be somewhat muted due
    to the effects of smoke, but increasing low-level moisture will
    support moderate destabilization. Moderate midlevel northwesterly
    flow will provide sufficient deep-layer shear for storm
    organization.

    Details of storm development and evolution remain uncertain across
    this region, However, isolated surface-based development will be
    possible near the cold front and effective warm front during the afternoon/evening, and one or more elevated clusters may continue
    into Friday night. There is a sufficient signal for storm
    development within a relatively favorable environment for the
    addition of 5% severe probabilities, though some adjustment will
    likely be needed in subsequent updates.

    ...Parts of the Southeast...southern Appalachians...Ohio Valley...
    Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop Friday
    afternoon, within a moist, moderately unstable, and weakly capped
    environment. Localized downburst winds could occur within this
    environment, though deep-layer flow/shear appears too weak to
    support an organized severe threat.

    Severe thunderstorms will be possible across portions of the Ohio
    Valley during the late afternoon and evening hours before moving
    southeast toward the Mid-Atlantic overnight. Additional
    strong-to-severe thunderstorms will be possible during the afternoon
    across portions of the Mid-Atlantic.

    ... Synopsis ...

    The CONUS-wide mid-level ridge centered over the north-central
    Plains for much of the past week will have retrograded west by
    Saturday and be located across the US and Canadian Rockies. Strong
    mid-level westerlies will persist on the ridge's northwest, north,
    and northeast periphery. Embedded within the westerlies, a series of
    short-wave troughs and smaller-scale vorticity/speed maxima will
    move across the Great Lakes and Northeast.

    At the start of the forecast period, the main short-wave trough will
    be located across central Ontario, with its associated jet streak
    located across the Upper Midwest. This feature will dig southeast on
    Saturday, ending up in the vicinity of northern New England by
    Sunday morning. Ahead of this main wave, the 20260716/00 UTC
    guidance suite shows multiple speed/vorticity maxima moving through
    the west-northwesterly flow, each of which will be capable of aiding
    the development of scattered elevated thunderstorms.

    At the surface, a weak surface low should develop Saturday morning
    across southern Ontario/the northern Great Lakes. This low will
    slowly deepen during the day as it digs southeast, reaching upstate
    New York by evening. Ahead of the surface low, southwesterly
    low-level flow will transport a very moist airmass northeast into
    the Lower Great lakes, with 70F surface dewpoints possible as far
    northeast as western New York.

    To the southwest of the surface low, a surface cold front will serve
    as an initiating boundary for thunderstorms during the afternoon. An
    unstable and strongly sheared airmass will be in place by later
    afternoon across Ohio northeast into western New York. As
    thunderstorms initiate along the front, large hail will be possible
    before thunderstorm outflows eventually congeal into one or more
    linear clusters posing a threat for damaging winds. This line of
    storms will push south and east during the evening and overnight
    with a continued threat of strong, damaging thunderstorm winds.

    Farther southeast across the Mid-Atlantic, most model guidance
    indicates the development of a surface trough to the east of the
    Appalachians during the late afternoon. To the east of this trough
    axis, temperatures will warm into the 90Fs, although there is some
    uncertainty how far north the hot boundary layer will extend. Given
    the presence of this surface trough and strong diurnal heating,
    several clusters of thunderstorms will be possible during the
    afternoon, especially if any of the previously discussed
    vorticity/speed maxima can interact with the low-level trough.
    Strong, damaging winds will be possible with any thunderstorm
    complex during the afternoon. Additional severe potential will also
    exist overnight as the remnants of the convection along the cold
    front approaches the region. Gusty thunderstorm winds will be the
    likely threat with these storms.

    Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected across portions of the
    Ohio Valley and lower Great Lakes into the Mid-Atlantic, mainly
    Saturday afternoon into the evening. Some threat may linger into
    late Saturday night.

    ...Ohio Valley into the Mid Atlantic and vicinity...
    Some amplification of a mid/upper-level trough is expected over the northeastern CONUS on Saturday, as multiple shortwaves move through
    the base of the trough. The primary surface low is expected to
    deepen as it moves across southern Quebec toward northern Maine. A
    trailing cold front will move through parts of the Ohio Valley and
    Northeast. A remnant surface front initially draped from western PA
    toward the Delmarva region is forecast to lift northeastward as a
    warm front through the period.

    As deep-layer flow strengthens atop a richly moist and destabilizing
    warm sector, organized severe potential is expected to develop
    across a relatively broad region from the Ohio Valley into the Mid
    Atlantic, with at least an isolated threat potentially reaching
    parts of New England. Uncertainties include the influence of
    early-day convection and potential persistent smoke on the
    northeastward extent of substantial surface-based destabilization.

    Along the cold front, the greatest relative threat is currently
    expected from the lower Great Lakes into eastern parts of the Ohio
    Valley, where stronger 850-700 mb flow (around 25-40 kt) is
    forecast. Organized cells/clusters capable of damaging wind and
    isolated hail may evolve along/ahead of the front and spread
    eastward. Rich boundary-layer moisture and modest enhancement to
    low-level SRH may also result in some tornado threat, depending on
    storm-mode evolution. Favorable moisture/buoyancy will also extend
    westward along/ahead of the front into parts of the Midwest and
    lower Ohio Valley, but there may be more of a tendency for
    convection to be undercut by the front with westward extent.

    Farther south/east, organized convection may evolve or reintensify
    near the effective warm front by afternoon into parts of PA/NJ, and
    also develop into parts of MD/VA along/east of a surface trough.
    Very warm temperatures and steepening low-level lapse rates will
    become supportive of damaging-wind potential, and isolated hail may
    also occur. Some tornado threat could also evolve in closer
    proximity to the warm frontal zone.

    An extensive frontal QLCS may develop by evening, and continue to
    pose some wind-damage threat for as long as it persists into
    Saturday night.

    ...Northern Rockies vicinity...
    Compared to previous days, some drying from the west is expected
    across parts of MT on Saturday, as a mid/upper-level shortwave
    trough moves across parts of BC/AB through the day. High-based
    convection is still expected from ID into southwest MT and vicinity,
    though relatively weak buoyancy and deep-layer shear should limit
    storm organization. Some overlap of stronger deep-layer shear and
    moderate buoyancy is forecast to occur across parts of northern MT,
    but storm coverage within this regime is uncertain, with stronger
    large-scale ascent currently expected to remain north of the
    international border.

    ...Southern Appalachians to Coastal Carolinas/Southeast Virginia...

    Upper troughing will persist across the eastern U.S. on Sunday. A
    couple of embedded vorticity maxima within the base of the trough
    will move across the southern Appalachians/southern Mid-Atlantic
    region through early evening. Deep layer westerly flow will remain
    modest, but a very moist and strongly unstable airmass will be in
    place. Large instability coupled with PW values near 2 inches will
    support isolated severe storms capable of damaging wind gusts. A
    corridor of relative greater risk may develop from southeast VA into
    eastern NC near a stalled frontal boundary and where vertical shear
    may be modestly stronger (25 kt effective shear).

    ...Eastern ND into northern MN...

    Northwesterly flow aloft will strengthen on Sunday/Sunday night as
    upper ridging flattens a bit as an upper shortwave trough emerges
    over the Canadian Prairies. Vertically veering wind profiles will
    foster 30+ kt effective shear magnitudes and a few organized cells
    could develop. Some potential for capping could limit storm
    coverage, but any storm that develops could be a higher-based
    supercell capable of severe hail and strong gusts.

    A broad mid/upper-level trough will remain in place across much of
    the eastern CONUS on Sunday. A weakening cold front may become
    nearly stationary by afternoon somewhere across southern VA.
    Scattered storm development is expected during the afternoon
    along/ahead of the remnant frontal zone, and also near the higher
    terrain of the southern Appalachians.

    Deep-layer flow/shear will generally be weak to modest, but large
    PW, steepening low-level lapse rates, and moderate to locally strong
    buoyancy will support vigorous updrafts and localized downbursts. In
    addition, low/midlevel flow may be sufficient for one or two
    outflow-driven clusters to evolve with time and move southeastward
    into the early evening, with wind-damage potential.

    ...Parts of eastern MT into ND/MN...
    A vigorous shortwave trough may evolve into a mid/upper-level low as
    it moves eastward across the Canadian Prairies on Sunday. An
    attendant surface low is forecast to gradually intensify as it moves
    toward Lake Winnipeg. A surface trough/weak cold front will move
    into northeast MT during the day and across parts of the Dakotas
    during the evening.

    A conditionally favorable environment is expected to evolve across
    parts of far eastern MT into ND and northwest MN during the
    afternoon/evening, as a 40-50 kt midlevel jet and steep lapse rates
    overspread a warm and relatively moist boundary layer. However, with
    the strongest height falls and ascent expected to remain north of
    the international border, capping may inhibit diurnal storm
    development. Any storms that are able to develop and mature during
    the afternoon and early evening could evolve into organized cells or
    clusters with severe wind and hail potential.

    Even if surface-based diurnal development is suppressed, there will
    be some potential for elevated convection to develop Sunday evening
    into the overnight. Steep lapse rates, moderate elevated buoyancy,
    and sufficient effective shear could support a hail threat with the
    strongest elevated storms, and severe-wind potential with any forward-propagating clusters that can develop Sunday night.

    The Level-1/Marginal Risk has been expanded westward across ND and
    far eastern MT to account for the conditional threat in these areas,
    though confidence in the details of storm coverage and evolution
    remains low at this time.

    Manitoba and western Ontario toward the northern Great Lakes.
    Meanwhile, a trailing cold front will sweep across the Upper
    Midwest, becoming oriented from northern Lower MI southwestward
    toward the Lower MO Valley by Tuesday morning.

    A very moist airmass (70s dewpoints) will be in place ahead of the
    cold front, fostering a corridor of strong to extreme instability
    across parts of southeast MN into WI and portions of the Mid-MS
    Valley. Supercell wind profiles are evident in forecast soundings,
    though linear forcing along the front, and the progressive nature of
    the upper trough, is likely to result in a bowing line of convection
    moving across the region. While all severe hazards will be possible
    given the favorable thermodynamic and kinematic environment, storm
    mode will likely favor a predominant risk for swaths of damaging
    winds. Eastward extent of severe potential is a bit uncertain as
    some guidance maintains rather strong capping toward Lake MI.
    Forecast trends will be monitored, and higher probabilities may be
    needed in a subsequent outlook.

    Broad upper troughing will persist across portions of the eastern
    U.S. on Monday, and modest west/northwest flow aloft will overspread
    the southern Mid-Atlantic vicinity. A stalled surface front across
    northeast NC will move north through the morning, and a very moist

    low-level confluence south of the surface boundary may pose a risk

    surface cold front. Widespread dewpoints in the upper 60s to low 70s
    are expected. While some uncertainty exists regarding potential
    morning convection in the form of a remnant MCS from the Day
    2/Monday period across parts of MI/IN/OH, pockets of stronger
    heating should occur, and given rich moisture/continuous warm
    advection ahead of the surface front, strong destabilization is
    forecast. While boundary layer moisture will begin the day somewhat
    muted across parts of the Northeast, strong warm advection and
    increasing southerly low-level flow across the Mid-Atlantic into the
    Northeast will also result in northward transport of richer boundary
    layer moisture through evening. While instability may be somewhat
    less further east into the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast, strong deep-layer
    flow will envelop this region as well.

    Supercell wind profiles are evident across the broad warm sector,
    with 40+ kt westerly flow common above 850 mb. Where supercells can
    develop and be maintained, all severe hazards will be possible.
    However, given the strong flow field, and the progressive trough and
    surface front, one or more bowing segments will quickly develop and
    spread eastward. Swaths of damaging winds will be the primary
    concern during the afternoon and into the nighttime hours.

    moisture.

    A mean upper trough will remain over much of region, with various
    waves rotating around. A leading wave will aid storm development
    during the day from eastern VA northward into southwest New England,
    well ahead of the main cold front to the west. Southwest flow at 850
    mb of 30-40 kt will support northward moisture advection as winds
    aloft increase, and storms should form by early to mid afternoon
    within a pre-frontal trough. Veering winds with height should
    support scattered supercells or storm clusters, and damaging winds
    or isolated tornadoes may occur.

    Meanwhile, an area of greater severe potential will develop
    immediately near and ahead of a cold front which should extend
    roughly from northern OH/IN into southern IL during the afternoon.
    This region will be ahead of a stronger mid/upper jet in a northwest
    flow regime. Dewpoints are expected to be in the 70s F with MLCAPE
    over 3000 J/kg and effective shear of 40-50 kt. The long hodographs
    should support a dominant supercell storm mode, with large hail, a
    few tornadoes, and damaging winds all possible from late afternoon
    into the night.

    The greatest risk area is currently forecast from parts of Kentucky
    and Indiana across Ohio, West Virginia, and western Pennsylvania.
    However, these areas will likely be adjusted spatially as
    predictability increases in later updates.

    trough moves across Alberta and Saskatchewan, and an upper low
    persists off the Pacific Northwest coast. Forecast soundings show a deeply-mixed boundary layer with steep 0-3 km lapse rates. Steep
    midlevel lapse rates will be sufficient for weak destabilization,
    and isolated thunderstorms are expected during the
    afternoon/evening. Given weak vertical shear and limited
    instability, organized severe potential is low, though gusty outflow
    winds could occur.

    Across the central High Plains, easterly upslope flow will promote
    moisture advection into eastern Colorado/ Wyoming. A weak shortwave
    will rotate through the flow with thunderstorm development expected
    across the high terrain in eastern Colorado/Wyoming by the afternoon
    with a gradual shift into the central Plains into the evening.
    Initially, high based thunderstorms may pose some localized
    potential for strong to severe wind. Deep layer shear across the
    central Plains will strengthen, but increasing MLCIN with eastward
    extent will likely temper severe potential. Overall, locally gusty
    winds will be possible but organized severe potential appears too
    low and localized for inclusion of probabilities.

    Boundary-layer dewpoints in the 60s to mid 70s will coincide with an eastward-expanding EML plume and associated cap to yield a fairly
    widespread reservoir of moderate to strong instability across the
    region on Sunday. There is some model signal for a subtle mid-level
    disturbance to progress from the northern Plains into the upper
    Midwest during the day with an associated band of forcing for ascent potentially serving as a focus for diurnally enhanced thunderstorm
    development. However, the absence of discernible surface boundaries
    and the residual capping leads to uncertainty in the location and
    extent of diurnally enhanced thunderstorm development. Nonetheless,
    a conditional severe weather threat will exist with any storms that
    can become rooted within the boundary layer, given the presence of
    35-50 kt deep-layer shear.

    More substantial forcing for ascent is forecast Sunday evening into
    night across the upper MS Valley with the approach of the mid-level
    wave mentioned in the synopsis. At that time, the surface front will
    be moving into the area from the west, potentially serving as a
    focus for thunderstorm development. The 00Z ECMWF in particular
    depicts a large thunderstorm complex developing over that area with
    a subsequent southward movement toward the mid MO Valley Sunday
    night into early Monday. A corridor of enhanced damaging wind
    potential would exist in that scenario; however, confidence in such
    an occurrence is presently too low to include higher probabilities
    and a conditional intensity group 1 contour.

    ...SUMMARY...
    Severe thunderstorms capable of mainly large hail and damaging winds
    are possible from the upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes into
    portions of the mid Missouri Valley on Sunday and Sunday night.

    ...Synopsis...
    Enhanced mid-level flow will round the central US ridge D3/Sunday, overspreading portions of the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. Along
    with the increasing flow, several shortwave disturbances will shift
    across the region. At the surface, a low will develop across the
    northern Plains/Upper Midwest with a surface front moving through
    the northern Plains/Midwest by the evening.

    ...Upper Mississippi Valley into the Great Lakes...
    Beneath strong upper-level ridging and a very moist air mass with
    dew points in the 60s to mid 70s, an EML plume will advect eastward
    across the High Plains into the Midwest/Great Lakes region. This
    will result in a very volatile and strongly unstable but largely
    capped air mass. While forcing for ascent will increase, lack of
    discernible surface features and strength of the capping inversion
    leads to low confidence in the exact evolution of thunderstorm
    development. Hi-res guidance does suggest that a few isolated
    supercells may develop. A conditional threat for large to very large
    hail, damaging wind, and perhaps a tornado will exist with any
    storms that can become rooted within the boundary layer, given the
    presence of 35-50 kt deep-layer shear and the favorable unstable air
    mass.

    As the front shifts south and east through the afternoon/evening and
    forcing for ascent increases, storms may develop as far west as the
    eastern Dakotas/Nebraska. It seems probable that a thunderstorm
    complex could develop across some portion of the upper Mississippi
    Valley, though confidence in the exact corridor remains low. This
    will pose a conditional threat for a more focused corridor of
    damaging wind potential.
