• FMail 2.3.1.0 release

From Wilfred van Velzen@2:280/464 to All on Sat Mar 30 18:46:29 2024
    Hi All,

    2024-03-30 - 2.3.1.0

This release is mainly about the fconfig for linux module.
So FMail is now fully linux compatible.
There are a few minor changes in the Windows version too.
And the Say hi function is now IPv6 enabled.
See the ChangeLog file for the full details.

(Except for the version number and some updated doc files it has the same source files as the last beta version: 2.3.0.2)

The release zip files in different flavours can be downloaded from the sourceforge file download page:

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/fmail/files/FMail/2.3/

I cannot enter the backslash (\) for directories, etc. in Fconfig.

I tried with Alt-Gr and Ctrl-Alt key combinations, also with Alt-92 and pasting from the clipboard. None of them work. It happens both on win32 and 64 versions.

What's on the properties/options tab of your terminal? Here's what is on mine:

Some oddball cheap machines have an edited codepage setting. Possibly Chinese?
It causes that. If another character appears, try entering that and it might work. Example, @ shows when I enter the " key but it works in reverse.

That shouldn't make a difference, because the \ is in the same place for both. But you could try setting it to 437 with the 'chcp 437' command in your terminal before you start fconfig.
Btw: Can you type the \ in your terminal on the command line?
Btw2: Can you type the \ in other more free text fields, like the Comment field of an area?

If I set mine to 850, I can still enter the \ in fconfig.

There's also the windows keyboard/language settings you could play with.

True, it shouldn't. But just in case I had already tried 'chcp 437' with no success.

    Of course! :-)

I checked on "SysOp Name". I cannot type "\" there.

    I'll try later...

But as I said, in versions 2.2 and older it works fine. Maybe something related to the changes for supporting Linux?

I am not having THAT problem. I can enter a backslash without problems. But there is something odd with the keyboard going on. I can not enter non-ASCII values. I have the keyboard set for Dutch and so I can enter umlauts and accents with the dead key method. E.g. an o with umlaut by first pressing the colon key and then the o. Or the single qoute and e for an e with accent. This does not work. I also have a setting to type cyrillics That doen not work either. Plus that Alt + num keys do not work. *1)

There definitely is someting odd going on with the keyboard.

*1) I had a scary moment. I am typing on a laptop withhout nummeric keyboard. In trying out some odd keyboard combinations to use the Alt+num codes I suddenly had the screen upside down. I had to use Rosa's computer to search the web to find a way to get it back to normal....

It's a "free" text field. So the problem doesn't seem to be related to the character limiting code for the directory name fields.

Ok, that narrows it down. It has nothing to do with the code changes for the linux version.

I made this change to try to make fconfig work in wine.

That it's an alt key on your keyboard probably explains it. On my keyboard it's a regular key between the backspace and the enter key. The shift version is |.

I'm gona have a look at the "new" code, and see what I can do. Or maybe I can revert back to the old windows keyboard code...

Aha. So I gather you have a dedicated key for the n with tilde? Here I use AktGr + n for thet, but that does noet work in Golded either. But using ~ as a dead key before n works in golded. ñ But not in fconfig...

"_The_ standard keyboard routines" ? ;-)

I'm using the windows function ReadConsoleInput(). It's pretty standard:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/console/readconsoleinput

But low level... So I might be doing things wrong.
    Golded uses it also...

Yes, we use it a lot in Spanish. :-) We also have another dedicated one for the c-cedilla (for Catalan/Valencian).

Here I use AktGr + n for thet, but that does noet work in Golded

AltGr doesn't work by default in GoldED. I had to add this to my golded.cfg:

AltGr is just a relabeling of the old right Alt key. In the old days they used to have the same functionality just like the left and right shift key. With the need for easy entering of more special characters like umlauts and accents, the right Alt key got some different processing in the keyboard drivers.

The golded windows keyboard code is pretty complex:

The code I get from Carlos's test, is if he pressed left-ctrl + right-alt at the same time when he uses AltGr. So it's not just the same as the let-alt key.

Really? Is it really unrealistic to expect that what works when entereing text on the command line also works when entering text in a command line application? That the expectation is not always fulfilled does not imply it is unrealistic I'd say...

MvdV>> And... The AltGr method now also works in Golded when
    MvdV>> activated...

The golded windows keyboard code is pretty complex:

    https://github.com/golded-plus/golded-plus/blob/master/goldlib/gcui/gk bdbase.cpp

The gut of it is from line 1695 to 1845...

    Hmmm...

And there seems to be special code to handle the alt-numpad keys at
    line 1760 and further...

I woulkd have expected the \os to take part of that so that a simple OS call would do it.

But then Golded was originally written for DOS where one had to write all that low level code. Plus that Windows internally uses unicode and the DOS code is all written around the one byte one character coding...

So maybe "DOS think" is still in the way....

Coming tp think of it... I have a setting forn na german keyboard on the laptop. On a German keyboard the key right of the 'l' is the o with umlaut. I With that setting I can enter an o with umlaut in the sysop name field by pressing that key.

    On XP I can, but not on Win7 and Win10: I get a ╧ symbol (=Alt-207)

    But I don't mind. I don't really need non-ASCII chars in Fconfig.

    This code is specific for Windows. The MSDOS code is from line 1563 to 1625, and uses cpu.genint(0x16);

You can look at the git history yourself for that file. The 2011 code for windows is more or less the same in this regard.

Coming to think of that. I have a Russian keyboard here and I tried that. With the keyboard set to Russian and the code page to 866 , I can enter non-ASCII characters in the sysop name and origin line fields but the characters do not match those on the keyboard. It is garbage.

I wonder what out Russian friends would say about that...

I don't think it's an issue WRT the sysop name field, as they mostly use romanized versions of their names.

But it would be a problem when entering area descriptions, also for many western languages...

For most of the history of Fidonet there never was a choice. Fidonet started as ASCII only and remanained that way for a long time. I wonder if they still would if there really was a choice...

Yes, more than just ASCII in the area decscriptions would be nice.
