From August Abolins@2:221/1.58 to Nick Andre on Wed Feb 15 19:43:00 2023
    Hello Nick!

I will never understand "stats"... those that collect
them, those that read them, the idea that one can judge
whats a good echo or not based on an arbitrary number of
posts. Especially busy-idiots who post them routinely as
part of some stupid script out of a need to feel
    important.

Granted, the stats of some of the echos are highly skewed with
the repetative auto-posts with rules and stuff. However, it is
good to have something to indicate that some life in them
exists and that someone has an eye on them.

Some echoes have lots of messages but are completely devoid of any interesting content while others have only a few posts but can be very interesting.

    I suppose it's a lot like tuning into a ham-radio channel and
hope that someone is there to have a chat.

The ELIST provides a healthy list of FTN echos. People simply
need to contribute to the ones that they are interested to see
    spring with more life.

    Hello Wilfred!

[...] And nothing much has changed in the last
couple of years, so I think you remember it wrong...

    Perhaps.

There is one rather long stats list with quite a few echos.
It's not too bad to work with.

So I think all the information you want is there, but
maybe not in the form you were used to by Janis. And
Janis's was a big system, with most areas (which probably
were mostly empty for a big part of them)...

Echos are a chicken'n'egg situation. New users would most
likely like to see what's in them (even if there hasn't been
much stats activity in them) in order to determine viability of participation. But if an echo has none, then it can easily be
skipped and ignored. But thankfully, %RESCAN can prove useful.

I always felt that Word of mouth is best... its what makes things a bit more fun, that cooperative-anarchy. Anyone can start something and almost immediately find others to pick it up without any formal regimented process.

That list only includes English-speaking echos.

are statistics and cooking-recipes from a database which over the
years have been posted at least 5 times.

There is some chatter in COOKING, not only recipes...

Correct, and even many of the recipe posts have chatter in them.

Are they even still doing the FidoGazette? I thought they had stopped
    with that.

Maybe I'm thinking of something else.
