• Canada Election

From Rob Mccart@1:2320/105 to ALL on Thu May 1 01:07:00 2025
By now probably most people who were talking about it have heard that
our Liberal Party under Mark Carney won the election, but didn't get
a majority gov't, which means he needs other elected people to back
him up to get things passed that he wants to get through, new laws
    and big decisions and such.

He only missed the majority by 3 'seats' which I think is called
a Voting College or Electoral District in the USA.
Depending on the estimates he got somewhere between 8.3 and 9 million
votes, but they mentioned on the news today that if he had gotten
just 608 more votes in exactly the right districts, he could have
won 3 more seats and gotten that majority.

I tend to prefer the Minority situation since it tends to limit
the power, and therefore the damage, that the party can do to
    the country.

Trump congatulated Mark Carney today saying he had hoped that
he might win since he figured that "Mr. Carney doesn't hate me
quite as much as Pierre Poilierve does".. B)

Apparently Poilierve didn't even win his own seat where he lives
so he's got to find a way to get rid of someone else in his party
who won their district so that he can replace them there..

Trump and Carney are supposed to get together at the White House
fairly soon. Trump talks like he thinks a lot of Carney, but
we'll see how that works out when they meet. One thing maybe
going for Carney is that he is well respected by national leaders
all around the world after working with them while he was the
Governor of the Bank of Canada for 5.5 years and then Governor
of the Bank of England for 7 years.. Trump tends to like people
he feels are important so maybe that history will help..

Funny considering that Trump had just a few short days earlier endorsed Poilierve and the Conservatives. Many FIDO MAGAs were pulling for him,
too, and are still licking their wounds.

It's hard to say whether Poilierve would have been as good or better
than Carney. He is less diplomatic and it might have ended up being
a shouting match rather than a negotiation with Trump, and we know
    how much Trump hates that..

During the election they had warned here that he would love to turn
Canada into the USA in all but name. That doesn't mean he'd want
Canada to JOIN the USA, he just wants to set things up more like you
have them there, which tend to benefit those making more money more
than the poor or old. Less social services, less healthcare coverage
and lower taxes for higher wage earners.

Interesting thing on the news today.. They said that Amazon was all
set to show two prices on things, the old price and the 'New' Trump
tariff influenced price so people would know what it was costing them.
They didn't have the exact details but apparently Bezos was 'contacted'
by the White House and, after whatever was said, he backed off on that..

Also.. Tesla is trying to take our gov't to court over rebates for
electric vehicles. Apparently when they heard that the rebates would
be ending soon, Tesla suddenly, over a 3 day period, magically sold
8600 cars and expected to get $43 Million back in rebates.

The whole thing sounds like borderline fraud and the gov't is
refusing to pay the $43 Million and has banned Tesla from any
    future EV Rebate programs..

I'm sure Musk's relationship with Trump had nothing to do with that.. B)

That one was in the news here a few days ago. The claim is that someone
may have thrown that (showing tariff influenced prices) against a wall to
see if it would stick, and that Amazon actually had no intention of doing
    so.

However, the rumor made it to the White House for them to react before
Amazon said it was "fake news." IMHO:

    (1) it was a good idea and someone should do that;
    (2) with the reaction of the White House, it is as if they know that
tariffs make stuff cost consumers more, even if they claim tariffs do not.

I had heard that one, too, a while back. I am guessing they are trying to
take Canada to court because they are still claiming they sold that many?

Looks like you answered my question. :D

Consider that sales have been down, 8600 sales happening magically over
what amounts to a weekend is very suspect indeed. ;)

That part didn't come out in our news.

    (1) it was a good idea and someone should do that;
    >(2) with the reaction of the White House, it is as if they know that
    >tariffs make stuff cost consumers more, even if they claim tariffs do not.

Increasing what consumers pay for things is what tariffs are designed to do.

There are only 2 reasons for it.

    (1) - To make things so expensive to import that a company will start
up to make those things in your country creating jobs/wealth..

That one is what Trump is trying to 'sell' you.. As if your people are
not smart enough to build new businesses if you could make more money
doing that than buying from us.

    (2) - Tariffs are a big tax for doing nothing that puts a lot of
money into the gov't coffers to do with what they please.

I think that may have more to do with it..

Also.. Tesla is trying to take our gov't to court over rebates for
    >> electric vehicles.

I had heard that one, too, a while back. I am guessing they are trying to
    >take Canada to court because they are still claiming they sold that many?

It appears that if it wasn't out and out fraud that maybe they did something like sold the cars to their dealerships, rather than to a buyer, and expect
to get the rebates intended to make electric cars cheaper for people.
The idea was to make electric cars cheaper for people to buy, not cheaper
for dealerships to sit on stock they can't sell.

They were back on again saying that the actual Tesla dealerships, maybe
only about 3 of them, sold about 4 times as many cars as all the many
other dealerships that sell them. Our finance people have basically
left it that they will have to show proof of sale to a buyer for every
car that they expect to get a rebate on. The problem there is that
the honest dealerships are also being blocked from the rebates after
they have already given them to their buyers.

    The latest Trump news today..

He wants to reopen Alcatraz Island Prison for the worst offenders..

And he is putting a 100% tariff on movies shown in the USA that are not
made in the USA since they 'constitute a threat to national security'..

What? They may show things he doesn't want US citizens to know ?
    Quiet censorship?..

He is also still going on about the 51st State and how he 'gives'
Canada $200 Billion a year to keep us from going bankrupt..
He said he doesn't want our cars or our electricity or our oil.

It would be fun to see how fast that would change if we just suddenly
stopped selling those things to the USA..

On Tuesday there is supposed to be a meeting with Trump and Carney
at the White House. It will be interesting to see how that goes.
