• Garmin GPS Units?

From Mike Powell@1:2320/105 to ALL on Fri Mar 17 15:09:00 2023
Does anyone have any experience with the Garmin GPS units? Specifically
the Drivesmart 55 and for US/Canadian travel?

I am looking for a unit that will allow me to customize my route, i.e. if
it picks the fastest or shortest and I decide I want to take a side road
that I have heard is more scenic.

In past I have not been so interested in GPS because I would rather use
maps. However, in recent years, my eyesight has gotten where it would be
nice to have something tell me where to turn, but only if I had some input
    in setting the route. :)

I used to use GPS a LOT, but you have to keep them updated to take full advantage...

I just use my iPhone now, and you CAN change the route as you want, and
even add stops along the route!

Mike, if you have a cell phone, try Waze. I've used it for years, and it may have what you're looking for.

As much as I like having a stock head unit to minimize the chance
someone will break in to my car, I'd love to get an Android head unit
and be able to run Android apps natively.

I've liked the idea of syncing my car and my home media via 4g/wifi - be
able to connect to my home network and sync folders on each.

I looked into stereos that had retractable screens, but it seemed like ones with all of the features that I wanted were prohibitively expensive.

Mighty Car Mods modified a Subaru to have an iPad instead of stereo and HVAC controls.

It could be nice to modify a car to hold an iPad and then bring it in the house with you, but could you leave the house without your iPad and then not have any HVAC controls?

What if you lost your iPad--or had it stolen?
