because my processor is blacklisted even though it meets the requirements. i was too lazy to change my processor and now so much
time has passed i'll just get a new desktop computer eventually.

I've bought several Dell 7050 and 3050 machines off of eBay that the processors are one generation too old. But if I turn on TPM 2.0 in
the bios, I can install a fresh copy of Windows 11 Pro and they run
without issue. They won't update from Windows 10, but they will
accept a fresh install. May be worth buying a new SSD and giving
    it a try.

i'm not that eager to run windows 11. i have not hit any roadblocks and i'm not a big gamer. i can still play newer games most of the time as well.

the only problem i have with microsoft is one or more founders are
    pedophiles.

i dont find the company evil, i know dos people loved to talk shit about microsoft. they just wanted our money, not our information like most companies now. but i think that is changing but they still are not as bad as google and the other guys.

futhermore they did a lot to fight botnets, even taking over domains . they forced windows users to get updates, which i know rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. for the greater security safety of everyone, this was a good thing.

problem is its not easy. It needs to be dumbed down so a sixth grader can use it. I wanted to use linux to run my bbs, but im a slave to windows or i will need to get a os/2 licence and run EleBBS and fmail/2.

Seems to me that could be a good learning experience..? You could install Linux in a VM to play with it and learn before setting up your BBS on it.

FreeDOS runs well in VirtualBox on Ubuntu. Then you can create telnet to comports from Ubuntu to VirtualBox. I've been playing with this setup to get some older BBS software running like Wildcat! and SBBS.

It's all about how you want to spend your time/energy. Windows includes Linux now, so there's really a very low barrier to entry (cost-wise, at least).

I also learned very quickly in my youth. When I was in high school, I think I had a photographic memory. I never cracked a book and graduated top 5% of the class. Smoking pot in the 70's stopped the photographic part but I still learned pretty fast. When Personal Computers came along, the pot smoking stopped... I now had more important things to spend my little bit of disposable income on... :)

Unfortunately, Altzheimer's runs in my family. My 93 yr old mother does not even know who I am anymore... this worries me for the future.

But I am still going to try to get the wife and myself on Linux as soon as I retire and don't have to use Windows for my job. I have already put Mint on her old laptop so she can start getting ready... if I give her all her tools, she should be ok after a slight learning curve. I need to get M$oft out of my life permanently.

Well, Jethro, you might want to come out of that shack in the hills and take a look around. The Linux landscape has changed quite a bit. In fact, there's a distro just for sixth-graders liike you. It's called Zorin OS. It's a distro that closely mimics Windows 10/11, without all the MS gunk.

It's not that I'm that much of MSFT hater but it's cool when regular computer users try to adopt Linux and stay comprehensive about it.
    I keep my fingers crossed.

I moved my wife away from Windows be she's on Mac now, which I don't believe is the same challenge.

While I completely agree with Gentoo, what in the world is so frustrating about Archlinux in this day and age?

Unless you refer to the old way of installing everything via a chroot environment, like Gentoo probably still does (you can still do it with Arch, but you don't actually have to if you don't want to any more)..

    1) Boot from ISO
    2) Install the package "archinstall"
    3) Run it, configure your whole install via TUI, with lightbar menus even. Including choosing whether you want a desktop environment, or anything else to be picked out of the complete list Archlinux and the AUR have to offer. The script runs and installs/sets up everything for you.
    4) Boot into your new install.

No need for compiling anything if you don't want to, and maybe one thing in the last 5 years that required a google search to fix (had to uninstall a package and reinstall it, or something).

Or would you just rather boot into something similar to Windows and have everything done for you via mouse click? Then I could see the argument. *shrug*
