you can just use all ascii or you can use msg format and the sysop can strip the codes if they choose to.

You have a 30/70 chance your ansi will display correctly. It depends what method (software) you use and which BBS's you post it on. Making an ASCII ad like MRO suggested would be the best thing. Also keep in mind many BBS users turn off ansi displays. It's not 1981 anymore Dorothy ;-) There are some very talented Ascii artists out there if you choose to go that route.

there's no rules against ansi ads.

i think mystic bbs has a problem with them when it goes over the network.
I just wouldn't use ansi cursor positioning or clear screens.

i dont know of any talented ascii artists.

You have a 30/70 chance your ansi w
    display correctly. It depends what

I tested posting an ANSI converted with
ans2asc that comes with Synchronet on a
Synchronet board and seemed to look
    alright everywhere.

it depends. sometimes you have to go in and manually edit it.
it's not a great replacement for an ansi.

oh another thing you can do is get vert via nntp on your synchronet bbs. then edit newslink.js and rig it to kick out any posts with ansi codes.

You have a 30/70 chance your ansi will display correctly. It depends what method (software) you use and which BBS's you post it on. Making an ASCII ad like MRO suggested would be the best thing.

The thing that I've found that works best is saving the finished ANSI so it has a maximum length of 79 or fewer characters per line. I'm referring to the line length internally within the file, and not the visual row width you see when you view it in the editor. There's a difference.

Any lines longer than 79 characters get line-wrapped by some BBS message readers, which is why they end up looking garbled. Look at (but don't edit) one of the SDT files in your /sbbs/data/subs for your networked ad echoes sometime, and you'll see that the ads that originate from Mystic BBSes almost never have a line length longer than 79 for this reason. The built-in Mystic ANSI editor offers this option by default, and so does AcidDraw. I personally use AcidDraw to do one final save when I prepare something as an ad.

All of the different message readers for Sync (DDMessageReader, msglist, and stock) seem to have only just recently solved for this problem earlier this year, so now they display ANSI pretty much however it's posted. But older Sync boards still using the older readers won't be able to display them unless they're saved properly.

Also keep in mind many BBS users turn off ansi displays.

Very true. This is why I also include non-ANSI ads in my rotation on other nets where I suspect older readers are dominant.

    I always shoot for 77
also no clear screen or cursor positioning or 'ansimation'

oh i'm surprised people still use aciddraw. usually people use pablodraw or something.

regardless, i LIKE ansi ads. i think they belong in the ad section.

I like to use Moebius to do the actual drawing, and then use AcidDraw (in DOSBox) to give it one final save with the max line length option if I plan to use it as an ad. I wish Moebius and PabloDraw both had the ability.

regardless, i LIKE ansi ads. i think they belong in the ad section.

Agreed. I like seeing all the stuff people make.
